Possible Mange
Hi everyone,
New here, we recently got our Staffy cross called Harley. She is a lovely bouncy and otherwise healthy pup. However yesterday I noticed a bald patch on her hind leg. Near her tail, after doing some panicked web searches it sound like it could be dermacetic mange? However I am not sure. She has a vets appointment booked next Tuesday (a week from now) but I'm wondering should I take her sooner? Is it a potential emergency?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Alex

Re: Possible Mange
Hi and welcome from me and mine
I agree, get her checked when you're going anyway and don't panic. If it develops into anything worse then maybe bring her appointment forward but even if it is mange it's not an emergency.
Dogs get bald patches for various reasons, including simple thing like just having rubbed themselves. Dr Google can be very misleading sometimes.

Thanks for both of your replies.
Yeah Google is very much the worst diagnosis machine. Ok I'll take her when she gets her 2nd jabs then.
Thank you both

Re: Possible Mange
Welcome to the forum!
As already said, Demodectic Mange isn't an emergency unless it's got to the stage of widespread hair loss & skin thickening, so don't worry.
Did you know that most pups are born with the Demodectic Mite? Most are kept at low levels by the immune system, but some pups just don't have enough immune levels to cope & they can become a bit of a problem. Many vets won't treat Demodex in a pup unless it becomes a problem, because once the immune system matures it often gets rid of the mites itself. Either way, if it is Demodex, it's nothing to worry about - it'll either go on its own or can be treated quite simply.
Bald spots, especially on short coated dogs, are not unusual, though. It could be food related, a rubbed spot, an irritant like an insect bite - all sorts of things. I'm sure your vet will advise you, but in the meantime don't worry!

Re: Possible Mange
Yeah she's a lovely looking lass. She's got a quarter rottie in her which explains the face markings.
