help my pup has mange!
I have a male staff x american bulldog, hes 5 months old. He started loosing fur and getting bald spots so we took him to the vet who told us he has mange/mites. We were told he needs a pipet of "Advocate" once a week for 4 weeks. he had his second treatment of it last night but he seems worse than he was before. He has spots, lumps, scabs and crusts all over his head and its starting to go to his legs and neck. Has anyone else experienced this? Or used advocate? is it meant to get worse before it gets better? Any help would be much appreciated as i find it so upsetting seeing him in this way. Thanks. Lauren.

If it's demodectic mange The hair loss loss does get worse before it gets better but not the scabs and sores, sounds like he may have a secondary infection that needs antibiotics. It sounds quite bad, when were you at the vets? Xx

Hi, thanks for reply's. Its demodex. We went to the vets last saturday. Maybe I'm just noticing more scab ect because of more hair loss, but to me it doesn't look like its clearing up at all but getting worse.

Yeah if he's making it bleed that's not good, at the very least he make need some anti histamine for the itching , you can give dogs piriton but best to speak to your vet about his treatment, let us know how you get on Hun xx

Re: help my pup has mange!
As Saz says it does get worse before it gets better and scabs and lumps can mean a secondary infection that requires a dose on antibiotics. Do let us know how you get on at the vets.

They said if advocate doesn't work he will have to have a chemical bath. Does anybody know what that would be like? I'm about to try ringing again (line busy so far) should i ask if he could have that now rather than wait? Thanks for all the replys and advice x

Re: help my pup has mange!
I spoke to the vets earlier over the phone and he said that it wont get better until all 4wreks of treatment have been done but said that i could take him to the vets for a steroid injection in a couple of days to help with the itching if it doesn't get any better (to give the treatment i just gave him time to kick in)x

Re: help my pup has mange!
I hope you took him back for further treatment.?
Rocky started with Demodex when he was a few months old and the advocate sorted it out. His fur re grew to normality after about 6 weeks after treatment.
He started again a couple of weeks ago in a different place but I recognised the problem straight away and more advocate has rid the mites again.
I think the bath is quite unpleasant for the dog but most effective but im sure your vet has advised you correctly.
Good luck.
