Mange??
We have been seeing bald patches forming over the past few weeks and have heard about mange. Anybody have any experience of this or recognise the patches?

Re: Mange??
Mmm, could be mange or some other local irritation.
One of my Dobermanns lost a lot of hair (mainly on the belly as I remember) and it turned out that she had an underactive thyroid, so it might just POSSIBLY be that .
Best get a vet to check I think - Good Luck.

Sorry I don't have experience of mange, but I would definitely give your vets a ring and book in so they can have a looksee

Re: Mange??
Hi, Sky is a lovely little girl, a couple of things this could be, but definite visit to the vet needed. It could be a hormone imbalance, possible parasitic infestation or a vitamin deficiency. Really hope all is okay!!

Re: Mange??
It's the rest of the body I would be concerned about as for Tilly she has always been very thin behind her ears since being a pup. Just pop to the vet and get an opinion off him but it looks like something is bothering her

Re: Mange??
Yep, trip to the vets and ask for a skin scrape for demodetic mange.
In the meantime, using advocate monthly will help keep demotex mites at bay apart from that it's all down to pups immune system.
Every pup is born with demodetic mites, it's basically down to the immune system if they develope into something that needs treatment.
Let us know how u get on x

Re: Mange??
To be honest, it could be one of several things.
She could have mites & that can be treated two ways; the vet can give you treatment for the mites themselves (either advocate or a special bath) or he could give you something for the irritation & see if she grows out of it - many pups do as their immune system strengthens. But he'll only be able to confirm mites with a skin scrape & a look through a microscope.
She could have an allergy to a substance in the house or a plant outside.
She's blue, isn't she? If she is, then it's possible that she has sensitive skin & you may need to put her on an allergen free food.
If he was loking for mites then he has Superman's vision - mites can't be seen with the naked eye!

Re: Mange??
well after half an hour of sky screaching in the waiting room with the whole room laughing at us ( embarrassing!!) We have ear drops for her ear which is dry and a bit waxy and also a 6 week treatment for mites etc and if it doesnt clear up we need to go back for a scrape.
£66 poorer we are now home lol...We also got told she is slightly overweight..which we assume is due to her recently being in season and not walking as much..lets hope it clears up...Thanks for all your replies!!

my dog currently has this type of mange it is demodexic mange, will need a skin scrape to confirm, may be wrong spelling, and also may be wrong still but get your vet to check it out,its non contagious, dogs have them in their system when born and usually the immune system suppresses them and keeps it from getting hold, which unfortunately both our dogs have had their immune sys lowered for some reason and they have taken off,the medication you use is Panomec(Ivermectin) in doses off 0.25ml for 3 days then 0.5ml for next three till 07.5
which is the maximum, but this medicine is only licensed for cows, pigs and sheep so you will have to sign a waiver at the vets, but no probs from me yet only 7th day though but that's the max dose so he should be OK after 2 or 3 0.75 ml doses till 1 month then a check up and i assume he will continue till its finished,PLEASE see your vet as if given in the wrong dose could be bad as mine was calculated by his weight and age.
Hope that helps
Chris

Re: Mange??
Thankyou, She is still beign treated with some mite liquid which goes on the back of her neck every 2 weeks, she has had her second lot of three so far and her patches are not improving so i think we will be going back in a couple of weeks!
I personally think it may be under active thyroid as she is a tiny bit overweight in my opinion even though she is being walked twice a day, she is always sleepy and her appetite is just crazy, i think she would eat all day if she could!

Re: Mange??
Hi Becky, you mention under-active thyroid which I brought up a couple of weeks or so ago. I would just mention that when my bitch was diagnosed with it, she had to have a blood test (£90 at the time, about 15 years ago) to confirm it. And then she had to have thyroid tablets for the rest of her life - I think they were about £30 a month or so, but can't be sure. The irony was that my bank had persuaded me to drop my pet insurance a month or so before she was diagnosed, to save me £12 a month (as it was then - I was in financial difficulties at the time). Good old bank - saved me £12 a month and instead I had to pay £30 ish a month for the rest of my dog's life!
Anyway, before the thyroid supplement, my bitch did get overweight and lethargic, but she lost her coat mainly on her belly (which was practically bare) and flanks, where the coat was very thin. All this was rectified by the thyroid tabs.
However, she didn't have little patches like in your photos, nor did she have sore places.
So please in the first place keep on with the anti-mite stuff your vet has given you. If she doesn't improve than personally I would go for a skin scrape before the blood test for under-active thyroid.
Do keep us updated, and GOOD LUCK! ><
