Dew claw op.
Was wondering if anyone has had this done and what sort of operation it is. Some of you may remember a posting a few months ago when Lily had a problem dew claw. She doesn't have one at all on her left paw and the other one is a bit of a problem - it doesn't even look like a dew claw. It is a different colour to the rest of her nails, is straight and grows out at an angle of approx 60 degrees. It just looks like she has something stuck in her foot. I first took her to the vets a couple of months ago as she had pulled it and he yanked it out and cauterised it He said it may not grow back again as the one on her other foot didn't. But it did within a short space of time and you can see it annoys her, she keeps chewing it and also paws her face. I took her back the other day and he just cut it down this time (£20) and said he didin't think it was painful to her but if it became problematical then he could remove it under anaesthetic. Even though he has cut it down she still chews whats left and paws her face.

Re: Dew claw op.
I have looked into it for Moo, she has split hers so many times! Its a pretty simple op, same recovery as splitting it, all ops have risks but the removal is very simple Xx

One of our members Mickey had it done for his dog Murphy, it went well and seemed quite routine.

Thanks for everyone's responses. Thanks for the link Mat, I did do a search before I did the post but missed that one. Didn't realise it was so expensive - thought I might have got away with the lampshade too Never mind, will monitor it a bit more to see if its manageable for her but if not I will get it done.

Re: Dew claw op.
I think the lamp shade is only for prevention, some dogs will leave the area alone whereas other dogs (like my Logan) would need them. So you mightent need it at all

Poor Lily - dewclaws are a beastly nuisance; an anachronism (like our appendix). I only wish that they could be removed when the puppy is two days old and the bone is only gristle, like they used to be in the old days - it would save a lot of pain and grief.
