Dew claw...
A short while ago Lola had an issue with a front paw (I think she twisted it) since then she's recovered, but I've noticed the dew claw and first claw (imagine thumb and index finger) have been getting longer than the rest. She's walked for miles on Tarmac so her claws are usually pretty trim, and tonight I've noticed a little blood around the base of the dew claw, and she whimpered when I tried to have a look at it.
I'm going to see if the vets have an opening tomorrow (she's nearly due her annual checkup anyway) just wondered if anyone had any thoughts? I an get a pic up shortly if it might help

Re: Dew claw...
They often catch the dew claw & if they bang it hard they can make it bleed a little. Is it cracked at all?

My vet's reluctant to remove the front dew cause it's attached by bone, unlike the rear dews that are generally just held on by skin, & it's quite a major operation. In fact they class it as an amputation.

I no hence why I have been pondering it for over a year now, but she keeps splitting it

Re: Dew claw...
I wish they'd just take them off at birth, like they do the back ones - they cause so many problems!

No splits, and it's not causing her any discomfort (unless I go near it)
Pic is about the best I can get, all her other claws are like the one on the left, including the dew claw on her other paw

Re: Dew claw...
Update! By the looks of it, she's managed to pull it off/away from where its supposed to be, lovely vet said they would probably pull it, but with Lola being fidgety and uncomfortable with people near it they would have to sedate her, so I have to drop her off in the morning, and they will happily do it tomorrow (£75! And it had to be car tax month as well)
Lola's response to being poked, prodded, pulled and generally being hurt by the vet? To wag her tail and give the vet a lick on the chin

Re: Dew claw...
She's home, all went well, dew claw removed and she's surprisingly full of beans considering she was fully sedated for it. The wallet isn't feeling too healthy now tho
