The thumb claw, not the dew claw...........
Chloe ripped hers out last week (well came home with a bloodied and twisted claw that she later pulled out). This afternoon she did a flying jump for a ball, slipped on a pile of leaves, and the whole bit where the claw once was started pouring blood. Anyone had this? She's perfectly happy now, but not sure whether to bathe her paw/curtail her running.............

I think Caryll will be the one to answer this as Dempsey has done it too (I think) also Janeys Moo.

Yes totally normal, got a call from the dog walker Saturday saying I needed to come home and see (Moo has done hers in again).....it's fine, all the vets recommend is keeping it clean and less sore by keeping it covered on walks for a few days, and keep a close eye as it as nerve endings showing and is at risk of infedtion but after a few days it soon hardens up Xx

Re: The thumb claw, not the dew claw...........
Dempsey's always hurting his paws. IMO, the best thing to do is to:
Stop any bleeding with a styptic pencil or powder. If you don't have one, plain flour can be used to seal off the injury and stop the bleeding.
Bathe it with mild salt water once the bleeding has stopped, to clear away dirt and bacteria.
If the injury comes into contact with the ground, cover the paw with a plastic bag or bootie during walks to prevent dirt from entering the injury.
It should be fine, as long as no infection develops. The risk of infection can be reduced by bathing it with saline solution once a day (or more, if necessary). If at any point you think it might be infected (bad smell, discharge, inflammation, discolouration around the site of the wound, etc.), a vet may need to prescribe antibiotics. Otherwise, these sorts of injuries usually heal quickly.

Poor Chloe! My two have never done it, but at the kennels sometimes dogs do it and we do what Caryll does! Since they're on their feet all day we also wrap it with "Vet Wrap" which is brilliant as it holds shut it's self without tape or pins or anything, it's not like a normal bandage so air can still get to it ect too whic is good for the healing process. You can buy some from Pets at Home for about £2 just while you're walking her instead of buying boots and is a bit more comfortable than having something tied or stuck to her foot my boy had to be walked in it for a while and it didn't bother him at all
