HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
First topic message reminder :
My mums staffy was out the back garden the other night, started runing up an down the garden going hyper, she finally got him in the house, he wouldnt settle, he started foaming at the mouth, but not while bad, as if he was going to be sick, then he started vomitting and having diarrhoea, she took him to the vets yesterday, the vet thought it maybe he was having a fit/seizsures, so he got some jags and some tablets, he was no better yesterday / last night. she was up with him all night, he was been sick, and having diarrhoea again, she took him to the vets this morning, he has a high temp, so vet keeping him in, gave him another few jags, and hooked him up to fluids, mum an dad went into the vets to see him there today, an the vet said that Ben had went for him twice, now the dog is no way vicious an would never go for anyone, hes a big friendly giant, mum even told the vet hes a very placid dog, there keeping him in tonight an monitoring him, the vets to ring my mum tonight, an let her know any change..
its very uncommon for a staffy to have fits/sezizures?
hes only 1 years old, hes had his yearly boosters, on good food,
really dont know whats happening, has anyone ever came across these symptoms on a staffy before????
any help really appreciated!!
hope hes ok, mums to let me know tonight when they hear
thanks

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
Well it sounds as if he is getting better, but the blood in the poo is worrying. Was it bright red blood?
Personally I would have scooped up the poo (which I presume they did anyway) and taken it to the vet.
If it is not possible to retrieve the bloody poo, then ask your parents to keep a very close eye on Ben particularly regarding any bleeding from anywhere, and/or (not to frighten you) a rapid deterioration in his general condition.
When is his next check up due?

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
well finally abit of good news, went round today to see the wee man, was met at the door with a wagging tail and a lick, hes definately improved, and coming out of his shell, was great to see him coming over wagging his tail an looking to get his belly rubbed, just like before he got sick, only hes still not as hyper as what he use to be, all his medication is finished, his poos are normal, hes not peeing as much, but then again hes not drinking as much as he use to, but hes on different food, which is wet, so might be something to do with that, hes been on that royal canine wet stuff, with vitamins an all, his hair/coat feels alot softer aswell,
just a wee picture of him earlier on...

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
sorry aint been on in a while!
not so good news... started another fit a week ago when mum came in from work at night, then he took another one, and then another one, 3 wee fits within a day or two...... took him to vet, give him some sorta stick things? that u put up the dogs bum to calm him, like dizapan?(spelling) when he takes a fit, then hes ok..... went to the vet again, got bloods took, everything came back clear?
vets putting it now down to epalispy?(spelling) and has put him on tablets to control them? been ok since... but its abit strange, he was ok, then a month later he takes a fit? hes alot hyper though than what he use to be?

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
Sorry to hear this, my grandma's Westie suffered from fits, they think he swallowed the teat from a child's dummy which caused it, but they were never sure.
He lived a good long life on medication. Hope this is the same for this dog x

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
I'd imagine with epilepsy it's a case of finding the dose that controls the prob. Too little and still fits. Too much and other effects.
U seem to be on the right path, funding the right dose is key

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
I'm so sorry to hear this Beaney. Hopefully, if the vet is certain that it's epilepsy then the medication prescribed will keep it under control. I'm guessing that you are scouring Google etc for epilepsy + dog .... I hope you can get some useful advice there.
Do keep us advised as to how this poor little dog gets on - we all care and are keeping our fingers and paws crossed for him, and for you and your parents. ><

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
Ben has had no fits since. Though one night me an the wife went round to visit mum an dad an see how Ben was. He was pure mad jumping an diving an just pure hyper!! I called round then the other night. Mum was working an the wife was at a course. Was just me an dad and Ben an sasha(other dog) he wasn't as bad. First I've seen him so calm with me? Lol.
Though needless to say mum an dad thinks the vets are useless and just out for money. I think the same to be honest... Not just with the Ben situation! Their other dog. Which I grew up with sasha she's 13 years old.. Few years ago we thought she was going to die! The other vets(who we where with at the time and my dog sam was with) turned round and said was it an emergency or could we wait? We where like course it is!!! An they then said we have no available slots. We where like i thought u cared for animals! We more or less has to say that we where never going to come back to their practise if they didn't see our dog! Which they did them when we threatened to leave! Total joke!
Don't know what it's like in mainland but I'm sure it's better?

Glad to hear things are looking good at the moment.
If you feel un confident in your vet don't be afraid to try another. I get on great with my vet, always been very helpful.

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
just a wee update, ben is still taking fits, but not as bad, the tablets are controlling them, but he is clean hyper, hes been getting big long walks, and still does'nt help him, the vet has upped the dose on the tablets aswell, really is a bad time for my parents and the dog, they really dont know what to do! though he has seem to took the fits more regularly now on these tablets, and since they have been upped... though was reading somewhere on the internet that upping the dose wont affect the dog for up to 14 days or something?

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
another wee update took a bad fit yesterday, mum an dad had to take him to the vet, gave them more tablets... also told them to come back at night to get blood samples taken, to see if the tablets are going into the blood stream, said something up having to either change the tablets or up the dose off them, as the dose probably aint strong enough,
they have also changed his diet now to the natural food, to see if that will help with his hyperness aswell, if not... hes getting doctored lol, though dad seems to think it might not make much difference in calming him down, sometimes it works, sometimes it does'nt
will keep yous updated on the fit/ tablet dose situitation

Oh poor Ben - it must be dreadfully worrying for your parents and you.
Good vibes being sent again ~~~ and hopes that the vet can get to the bottom of this problem and get Ben back onto the road to good health.

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
just a small update, thankfully ben has been fine since! and seems to be doing well,
hes now on 5 tablets a day, and on the RAW food diet, which he loves, apparently when going on this food, they have to be weened on it, but ben didnt need no weening on it, he loves it lol,
just a few new pictures off him, with his new hoody and new boomer ball, he loves the boomer ball, not so much the hoody but!!! lol

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
Thanks for the update!
His hoody's the same as Dempsey's!
Very often a dog doesn't need to be weened onto a raw diet, they can switch straight over because it's such a natural food. Sometime sit might give them slightly soft poo for a day or so, but that's generally it.

Re: HELP - Foaming at the mouth, vomitting, diarrhoea,
Hi just seen your post, how is he doing? Has your vet heard of L2HGA ? It's usually diagnosed around 12-18months. Seizures are a symptom and excercise and excitement can trigger. My staffy has recently been diagnosed and on Phenobarbital so hold back the seizures. I've posted on here under L2HGA.
