So scared for Charlie

Hi all. As you know, I'm supposed to be bringing my staffy pup Charlie home in a few weeks but its not looking good for him. He is one of a litter of 7. 2 were stillborn, and in the last 3 days, 3 of the other have died. The vet thinks the mum had an infection that was passed on to the puppies at birth. There is just charlie and a bitch left. They are now on antibiotics. They are the biggest of the bunch, Charlie by quite a large margin. I hope their size will help them fight it off. I'm absolutely terrified that he's going to die too-i'll be devastated if he does

Thanks guys. The mum was perfectly healthy throughout the pregnancy but needed a c-section for the last 5 pups. 2 of the 7 were stillborn but the other 5 were checked over and given a clean bill of health. But in the last 3 days 3 have been killed by heart attacks that were caused by an infection. The breeder is a good friend of my dads here in Bournemouth. He's gonna keep me posted cos I'm going home to Plymouth today. I dont want to be so far away from Charlie now but my dad is going to pop round most days and see how they're getting on. When my dad updates me, i'll let you all know. Thanks for the support guysx

Hey guys, just a quick update. Charlie and his remaining littermate are doing really well, walking around and growling and playfighting and doing everything puppies should. The vet says if they are still well in a week's time, they should be in the clear from the infection that killed the other pups. The last one died 5 days ago and they all died within 24 hrs of each other so I'm hoping he's going to be ok now. Just want to get him home and give him a big squeeze. 2 more weeks to go!

Bad news guys. The other pup just died Charlie is the only one left. The vet seems to think its a case of when, not if, Charlie goes too. I am absolutely devastated

Thanks Caryll. The vet cant explain it and has never known a whole litter to die one after the other like this. The breeder is in pieces. I'd like to think he can pull through, but the pup who died earlier was nearly as big as charlie and been doing as well as charlie. They were playing normally today and this evening the little guy had a seizure followed by a fatal heart attack, exactly the same as the others

Has the vet done any post mortems or tests on the others?

They were planning to. Not heard back yet tho. Will ring the breeder about it tomorrow.

Thats so sad.....got everything crossed for Charlie, I so hope the little fighter gets to his forever home.

I spoke to my dad earlier, he's going round to the breeder tonight to see charlie (who is ok today) and have a chat. The vet is doing a postmortem on the puppy that died last night, hopefully that will shed some light on the situation. My dad is going to ring me when he gets back tonight. (he's also gonna try and get a really decent pic for me to post here) I'll update you all tonight when i've spoken to my dad. Thanks for asking

Hey guys. I've just spoken to my dad who's been on the phone to the breeder. The postmortem showed that all the pups were born with a weak heart due to infection the mum had when she was pregnant. When the puppies caught the infection, their immune systems were so low and their hearts too weak to cope. Charlie has had a week of antibiotics and is the biggest and strongest of the lot. He has the weak heart though. His teeth have come through and he's now on puppy food. The breeder said that before the last 2 pups died, they were extremely lethargic and didnt want to move. She said if charle shows any signs like that, she'll whisk him straight to the vet for an adrenalin shot. I'm really hoping his size and strength balance out the issues with his heart and he gets through this.

Thank you gem. If he makes it, he'll be so loved and well looked after. I wont mind how many piles of poo or wee I have to clean up or how many new shoes/rugs etc I have to replace. I just want him home safe and sound x

My dad phoned me half an hour ago to say that charlie is walking around and growling and trying to playfight with anything and everything. He must miss his brothers and sisters, he used to do that with them But he seems ok for now, thats the main thing. I've got a little fighter, thats for sure!
