Staffies; outside dogs?
So I just got a staffy as a rescue dog about a month ago. She's 15 months old and veryyy active. I expected her to have some energy, but she really takes it to a new level. I take her for walks as much as I can and play in the yard with her as much as possible, but she's still getting a bit destructive, due to boredom I'm guessing?
Because of the house I'm renting, she has to be an outside dog. I'm just wondering if that is suitable for this breed, or do they need to be inside and closer to the family to avoid the boredom?

Re: Staffies; outside dogs?
Hello and welcome.
Congratulations on your new family member too.
One big issue about being an outside dog, or not as often is the case of the staffy, is that the staffy does not have an undercoat so they are very sensitive to cold and humidity.
What is your girl eating ?
Some feeds can be responsible for excess energy, especially the cheaper supermarket brands.
Are you stimulating your girl mentally ? That’s as exhausting as physical exercise so look into games and challenges you can give her, as well as working on her basic education. Work on your commands as a distance, play search for kibble or treats, teach fetch and retrieve. The more imagination you have, the better

Re: Staffies; outside dogs?
Thanks so much!
Where I live doesn't get too cold, and I have bought a couple of good jackets for her just in case it does get a bit cooler. This shouldn't be too much of an issue though, but I'll keep an eye on her.
Up until a few days ago I was feeding her dry food mixed with either pet mince or pet chicken balls. However she had a bit of an upset stomach so the vet advised me to give her just the dry food for a few months until it settles. The dry food I was using was Pedigree (just a general supermarket brand), but I have just upgraded to Nature's Gift, which I'm hoping might have more nutritional benefits. Is there anything specifically I should be looking for with that?
As for the mental stimulation, Ive been looking into different things, but haven't been able to find a lot. I've bought a few of the Kong toys for her to chew, as this is another issue we're having (chewing on EVERYTHING lol). But I'll have to keep researching on activities. The only thing I'm restricted on with that at the moment, is that the vet said she's not allowed any treats or anything, only dry dog food until her stomach is settled.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Staffies; outside dogs?
Regarding feeding, this link can help you alot
https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/
For starters, the pedigree is scoring at 20% whilst Nature’s gift is 48% so a significant improvement.
For your destruction and chewing, how much time does your girl spend alone ? As she’s a rescue, it could be more separation anxiety related than boredom, or maybe a bit of both ?
Mental stimulation can be hiding kibble in shoe boxes, throwing a handful in the garden and asking her to seek, teaching her to wait until eats kibble from bowl/hand/paw, etc. Anything that requires her to think and you’re on your way. Doesn’t need to be fancy, that’s the beauty of it
Then you can look into tools like this

Re: Staffies; outside dogs?
Hi from me & Katy You could get her a snuffle mat to hide her kibble in or do scent work where you hide kibble around the house or yard for her to use her brain & nose to locate it. Mental stimulation is very tiring
I can totally agree with Nifty for looking at absolute dogs they are really good & use some great games

Re: Staffies; outside dogs?
Thanks so much!
Ive just tried hiding some food around for her, she seemed to get bored pretty quickly with that. I guess everything's just trial and error, depending on the dog.
Ill definitely look into the snuffle mat. I heard of them a week or 2 ago and have been looking in my local pet shops for one, but haven't had any luck. Will have to see if I can find one online.

Re: Staffies; outside dogs?
You can find a range of snuffle mats on amazon
As for the boredom, she could just be “lazy” but if you motivate, they usually fall very easily back into the game. You are also teaching her that she can work to get kibble, she’s already mastered fetching that ball
What’s you girl’s name btw ?
Would love to see a photo of her

Re: Staffies; outside dogs?
Hi.
When you say she's an outside dog, what are her living fond toons like outside?
Does she have a draught proof shelter/kennel?

I do indeed! Bloody auto correct. That'll teach me not to press 'send' before I've checked what I've written!

She has a waterproof canvas kennel. It seems to keep some warmth in too, although it doesnt get too cold where I live anyway

Re: Staffies; outside dogs?
You could also try some scent games with her. Get a few plastic cups, line them up about a foot apart & hide a couple of treats under one (keep her out of the room whilst you do this). Call her in & ask her to 'find'. If necessary put her lead on so that she doesn't trash the whole lot straight away. Try to encourage her to sniff each one individually & when she shows that she can smell something under the correct one, loads of praise & give her the treats.

That's good.
Personally I don't think staffords in general thrive on outside kennelling, although I'm sure some do. They are very people orientated dogs & love to be with someone.
Is she left alone for long during the day? If so, would it be possible for someone to call in during the day and give her a fuss or a walk? A family member or friend - or even a professional dog walker?

She's not left at home by herself too much at all. I'm a stay at home mum at the moment, so the only time I'm not home is for school drop off or a quick trip to the shop. I do try to spend as much time as I can with her outside too.
