Are staffies more attracted to each other than other dogs?
Hi our dog des is a male coming up for two now and neutered about 4 months. I understand that it takes about 6 months to be totally effective but so far he's really not bothered about any female dogs. In fact his fav playmate is us and the ball!
He's friendly with other dogs and will play about with others but the ball is king overall ;-)
Last night we took him to the vets (he's ok just checking if had a water infection) and he saw a lovely female staffy. He was transfixed! He wasn't being assertive or aggressive, just fascinated and she went all coy :-) was very cute to see.
What are people's experiences?

Tilly has lots of friends and plays well with them but she does seem to recognise staffys and always make a bee line for them

Bandit hated other staffords, I think it was because he felt an underlying arrogance that he had as well & he didn't like it!
I don't think it's anything to do with breed. They just like the size/shape, maybe?

Rocky gets on great with two spaniels we know from going to our local park, he will gladly run around with them all day. However if he spots a boxer thats it game over, he does not like them, I think it may have something to do with how their eyes are set because he is like it with some other dogs too and they are boxer/cross something or other.
Also dogs that have their tails docked can be problematic as its harder for other dogs to read their body language and can misread signs.
And other Staffys Rocky loves them and will play great if we do meet them in the park. We did used to see a couple of EBT too and they were great fun.

I definately believe that breed does recognise breed (or characteristics). I have seen it with my previous Staffie and with Tyson now. Seen it happen with Beagles and spaniels as well. In Cesar Milan's first book, he describes how, after a long pack hike, his dogs rest together, like with like. (GSD with GSD, Rottie with Rottie etc)

I don't think dogs recognise breeds. They may see a dog with characteristics that they feel comfortable with, but it has nothing to do with their 'breed'. That's a concept that a dog can't understand.

Honestly they are so rare here that i have never met another staffy when i have been walking lex. She met one once at the vets and gave a gurruf but i don't think that it being a stafford had anything to do with it.

Suki has only meet two AmStaffs before and neither was socialized very well.

i always thought dogs could distinguish between different breeds and there characteristics. my mum had a rescue colli cross spaniel bitch that hated all german shepards her whole life no matter how much socialising my mum did with it, put her with any other dog and she was good as gold.

Birds of a feather flock together they say. Wonder how they can tell just what a dog's brain can process? I am sure they are more in tune to all their senses than humans are.

Saxon gravitates towards other bull breeds, I think because they have similar play styles.

That's a good point. Suki is drawn to larger dogs espically if she knows they will wrestle with her

Thanks for all your responses, I must admit not many pure bred staffies near where we live, des does love them when we do meet up though. Any ones we have met have been very friendly and sociable. Des isn't so keen on collies but then they can be a bit sensitive and he does like to say hello and not always reads the go away signs ( he's learning).
We see alot of Labradors and springer spaniels being in the country and he likes them to run around a bit with.
