Hi staffy people
Hi there 3.5 weeks ago I started fostering a lovely little very scared staffy. She is adorable non aggressive but scared of dogs, men people she cant see etc. She was a stray and arrived at rhe rescue covered in unknown wounds either barbed wire or dog bites. She is well recovered from her physical wounds but not her mental. Anyway she clings to me like a limpet and it is lovely and snuggly but I have to encourage her to be more independent. Has anyone else had experience of a staffy with a similar traumatic start who can offer some advice. Thanks

Re: Hi staffy people
Hello and welcome.
Good on you for fostering your girl, sounds like your paths crossed when she really needed someone like you.
How old is she ?
I’m just thinking that a short month is not alot of time to forget a bad start …

Re: Hi staffy people
Sorry, lemme finish my post (girls needed a garden toilet trip)
So I was saying that a month to adjust to new environment, new life is just the start. Especially when it concerns mental scars more than the physical ones.
Sounds like you’ve been doing a really great job so far getting her health back on board and showing her that she is safe in your bubble. Then it will be “slowly does it” to build up her confidence. Remember that what might seem like small steps are probably huge leaps for her

Re: Hi staffy people
Hi thanks for your replies....in answer to question about age Tilly is 8 years old. And I agree that giving her time is essential but it is nice to hear other people think it is still early days. At home when playing ball she forgets all her fears and can get very grabby with her ball so we have started to review all the basic commands. It is obvious she has been taught these in the past but not very well. Tilly seems quite happy to earn some extra treats so hopefully we will manage to keep our fingers once drop it and leave it become second nature.
