Help huge reaction and a poorly staff ....foot chewing issue
Hi all,
I hope you are well . i have an 11 year old called Ella. Approx 11 days ago she started chewing a paw, initially we felt she had just cut it. Taken to the vet as chewing on the paw was becoming an issue. Given antibiotics and a cone, cone was hell and she caused huge damage getting herself out of it . Antibiotics fin after 7 days and on day 9 her whole face swelled , with blisters all four paws and huge swelling , completely out of it and very poorly. Immediate vet admittance , touch and go with a 1.5 kilo weight loss in 9 days.....4 days in many drugs later and they have now just let her come home..... we still have an issue with the cone and she has been home less that 4 hours and she is already at it. They were concerned she had Alabama rot and the antibiotics and been administered early enough to perhaps help , kidney function was fine and now they feel we are past the 10 day ( window they say there is for kidney failure ) we have her here. I am concerned for the night and just need some advice ? help ? The vet said she could board but it is not an answer we need to keep her away from the paw ..... but ..... she is strong and at nigh she is worse and goes nuts.

Re: Help huge reaction and a poorly staff ....foot chewing issue
Hello and welcome.
I personally never use cones but use the inflatable collars like these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Buster-279806-Inflatable-Collar-L/dp/B007GH3XJU/ref=sr_1_6?crid=32RZML0UAGKFU&dchild=1&keywords=buster+collars+for+dogs&qid=1596132173&sprefix=Buster%2Caps%2C215&sr=8-6
Does Ella have some kind of bandage on her paw ?
How good are your sewing skills ?
I had to keep my cat from ripping her bandage off her paw and licking it so I sewed some closed end “trousers” for her front paws with a pair of old jeans.
I would avoid the solutions of gaffer tape as you risk a bandage that is too tight which cuts the circulation, not ideal.

Hi from me & Katy I agree with Nifty on trying the inflatable collar instead of the cone! Would be a nightmare in my little cottage Is there anything you could put on her feet so she can't get to them to chew?

Thank you for reply . The cone is starting to create a calmer situation however itching on face is now persistent and the paws less persistent. She is on piriton and steroids.

Re: Help huge reaction and a poorly staff ....foot chewing issue
Have you considered or tried boots and/or socks ?
She’s probably dying to itch but at least she’ll be doing less damage when she does.
I think those medication need a day or two to have effect so you should be seeing slow improvements now
