Yeast infections and weight loss Empty Yeast infections and weight loss

Good morning, I've just signed up today, so hello everybody.... My staffy is nearly 6yrs old and we've had her from 12 weeks. She has always been on grain free biscuits with grain free cubes of a frozen fish mixture as a treat. Last year she developed a yeast infection (I realised this came from her eating bird seed that I'd put out in feeders - now removed) which presented as follows: scratching all the time, nibbling her feet and legs, hair loss on hind legs and she smelt. After consulting the vet she was given medication and is on antihistamines too. Before she had the yeast infection, she used to be a real lady with her food and ate it 'normally'. Now she is gulping her food down to the extent that she makes herself choke, stops, regurgitates and then starts again. I've changed her bowl so she has to eat slowly, but as she is a Staffy, she has discovered that if she flicks the food out of the bowl with her tongue, she can then gobble it down. She is regularly wormed, flea'd and bathed for her condition, but this eating habit is driving me round the bend. She is constantly looking for food and I've no idea why and she has lost weight...... When I first took her to the vet last year, they said she needed to lose weight, well she has, but now she is the opposite way and nothing I do fills her up or helps to put the weight back on. Phew!!! after all that, has anybody else had the same problem and is there an answer to this, I'm at my wits end. Thank you for listening.

Hello and welcome.

Aside the bathing and the antihistamines, is your girl still on some kind of treatment ?
Maybe that is what’s causing the weight loss.
I do think that a vet check could be an idea, just to check all is ok.

For the food gobbling, mine are also specialists.
For Nifty, she stopped after a phantom pregnancy and a change in kibble.
For Opium, I find that putting water in with her kibble slows her down and stops the gobbling as she has to drink the water too.

To help general well-being, have you considered giving a few berries (antioxidant) to your girl ? Mine get frozen blueberries and sometimes other berries in their evening kibble.  Smile

I've had her checked and the vet said that she is fine, she is on continual medication to keep on top of the scratching..... but hadn't thought to leave it out for a while as I just cant bear to see her in distress - will give it a go though.

It won't hurt to try her on the berries, I also make sweet potato, carrot and swede mash, ice cubes her them - defrosted - to go with her tea.
Thank you for the idea

It's just frozen veg cooked according to instructions, leave to cool and mash. Fill ice cube trays and freeze, just defrost before mixing with kibble.
