Yeast Infection
hoping for some advice.
Our dog Brutus gets regular yeast infections in his ears. The vets have done several tests, all coming back positive for yeast. On top of this his paws can get quite sore and have that distinct yeasty smell. He was on a raw diet and at the advice of the vet switched to a hypo allergenic biscuit diet that seems to have calmed the yeast down to a degree. However, he still needs to have his ears cleaned weekly and the chews his paws occasionally.
The problem though with the biscuit diet is that his anal glands are causing trouble. we are having to express them on a fortnightly basis, and on occasion weekly. The vets have indicated that it's not due to the biscuit diet, but I can't help but think it is. His skin has also taken a turn back and is now quite flaky, something that was fixed with the raw diet.
I'm curious as to whether anyone else has had similar issues as the above and how they were resolved? Did you return you dog to the raw diet to fix the anal gland issue, only for another issue to arise? Or did you leave the dog on the one diet and dealt with the other issues separately?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers

Re: Yeast Infection
Take a look at Thornit. I've used it on my Flo's toes and it's done some good. I believe it was originally developed for ears though.

Re: Yeast Infection
Hey! Have you found that it has been better since switch ing from raw? I would have thought it would be the opposite? Lots of vets don't like raw and won't recommend it they tend to make money from the brands that they sell! Sometimes the allergy can be from a specific protein? Did they give you anti fungal treatment for the yeast infections?

Re: Yeast Infection
Sounds like alergies to me. If he was doing better on raw I would go back to that. For the ears and paws I'd wipe him down after being outside in case the yeast is from a grass or pollen allergy. We clean Suki's ears weekly with a cloth and give her a rub down after walks and she has been doing great

Re: Yeast Infection
Do you buy the new food from the vets? If so that may be the reason why they don't want you to change back. That and the fact that a lot of vets disagree with raw feeding.
By the sounds of it, he had a lot less problems when he was on the raw food. You know your dog best and if you feel he would be best switched back then I would go with it.
As Ian mentioned, try Thornit powder. I've heard good things. We also use Apple Cider Vinegar for Bane's ears. He has a dust mite allergy so his ears always get flaky and sore, a couple of cleans with the ACV clears it right up! It's not a permanent fix and he hates ear cleans but it's manageable! I've heard it is good for yeast infections too
