Chronic ear infections
Hi
Does anyone else's staffie get reoccurring ear infections? It seems every few months I have to take Oscar to the vets because an allergic reaction (which only occurs in his ear btw) causes puss to build up, literally within a week & create an infection.
I just wondered does anyone have any tips to prevent/treat this, and whether its a common problem with staffies xxx

Re: Chronic ear infections
Not had this issue with Suki yet. My old dog used to get them frequently. The vet gave me a medicated cleaner that I would use once a week or so to flush them out.
I know some members here have that issue so better advice should be along soon

Re: Chronic ear infections
When I got Daisy she had untreated infections in both ears and as a result has damage to both ears
The vets have prescribed steroid drops which I can apply as and when needed, however, I keen to take a more natural approach where possible so am currently experimenting with other products.
She has also had demodex and the steriods have a counter productive effect on that so it's a viscous circle! The vet has encouraged me to try more natural products in the hope that I can find something that works so we'll just have to see how it goes. I'm currently trying the Petnat range which you can buy online.
As said before I would speak to your vet as each case is different especially as it seems Oscar's problem is caused by an allergic reaction, do you know what the allergy is?

Re: Chronic ear infections
No Hun they don't kno what's triggered it. I've changed his food, stopped using plug ins etc the bet has given me Surolan so going to see how this goes.
I will try petnat as a regular treatment if this Surolan clears it up for him x

Re: Chronic ear infections
Logan was getting sore itchy ears at a time a while back. My vet is very good and when I brought him in he had scratched at them until they were all cut.
The vet took a swob and examined it under the microscope to find that it was malassezia, which he said he has noticed to be quite common in Staffies. In the early stage it is very easy to treat and involved a medicine for 7-10 days and it hasn't came back since.
If possible you maybe could mention this to your vet next time and they will hopefully do it for you too
