Hi from me & Katy Sniper is a handsome boy, thankyou for rescuing him

Hello and welcome from my girls and me.
Sniper is a very handsome boy, do you know much about his past ?

What a lovely dog Has very kind eyes we wanted to rescue too but sadly the only kind of a dog were allowed to adopt is a tiny pup like a chihuahua or Jack Russell, our garden isn’t that big so the local rescues won’t allow any medium or large dog to move so we had to buy our girl, always wanted a staffy something special about their faces

Hi thank you for your welcomes .However I do need help with Sniper. Due to CV19 lockdowns obedience training isn’t an option. Sniper is a very needy, cuddly extremely affectionate boy BUT also very stubborn or suffering from PTSD from the time he spent in the shelter ??? This has happened a few times whilst we have been out on a walk but today was the worst. The cows had escaped from the farmers field and were in the field we were in. Sniper just froze and would not move. The cows came within 2 metres of us and one was stamping his feet I nearly ran but Sniper wouldn’t move my granddaughter ended up picking him up but couldn’t carry him far it took nearly an hour to get him to move again. He’s done that before but not for so long and I thought it was noise from a semi trailer that had spooked him. Most times he is walking and running at 100klm hour until he has one of these random episodes anyone else seen anything like this before. Many thanks

When you say he freezes, is it just his feet which are like stuck on the spot or is his gaze fixed on the thing he’s startled by too ?
Does he bark or growl ?
What is his body language saying ? Scared or defensive or ready to attack or intrigued ?

Ideally you need to get him to click out of his trans and get his attention back, but easier said than done.
Have you tried to get his attention back on you with a squeaky toy or a clicker or a high value treat from your pocket ?
You won’t be able to pick him up easily (that’s alot of muscle !) but maybe if he’s wearing a harness with a front attachment, you can clip your lead to the front to try to unbalance his shoulders to swing him around hence unblocking his feet.

Whatever you do, you can’t go heavily enough on the praise as soon as he makes even the slightest effort in your direction. Try to stay calm, he’ll feel stress in your voice and body language which will validate his reaction and in his mind, give him reason to panic.

Yes his feet are stuck on the spot like in cement boots with his gaze fixed as if in a trance. I am feeling quite excited as I think this problem is solved. I think I got the info from your site I'm not sure as I've been looking everywhere for help. Anyway when he's in a trance with his feet parted and legs like they're not budging anywhere I walk straight in front of him so he's not staring at whatever and try and turn him in the opposite direction hurray it worked. He stopped with a motor bike noise too and I did the same and we were on the move again. I just have to fix the separation anxiety now and I've been reading the notes on your website so I'll give it a try also and then I will have a beautiful extremely affectionate pet who I can take on walks and have a good time and if I have an appointment I can leave him for a few hours without his ungodly crying going on. LOL? No-ones perfect eh !
