Allergies
Hi I have two Staffordshire bull terriers. I'm having problems with 1. Everytime she comes in from the garden she constantly nibbles her toes and scratches her ears. I'm assuming she has an allergy to grass pollen etc. U can also see tiny lumps on her fur but these disappear after a while. I've brought her to the vet and they confirmed no ear mites or fleas etc. Currently I am giving her two antihistamine tablets and I'm currently changing her to grain free food. I've also been putting drops in her ears but after 2 weeks still no change. Am I not giving the tablets time to work? Or will I see a change when she is on total grain free. All help appreciated.

Re: Allergies
Welcome to the forum!
The tablets probably are helping, but every time she goes into the garden she's exposed to whatever us irritating her - probably grass sap rather than pollen.
Try wiping her down with a damp cloth every time she comes into contact with grass, as well as the anti-histamines. Which anti-histamines are you using?

Re: Allergies
cetirizine hydrochloride ones as recommended by the vet. One in morning one at night. It's mostly ear scratching that is the trouble. Feet nibbling not to bad. That's y I got ear drops aswell. I thought maybe it was my other dog licking her ears so much has maybe made her have dry skin inside her ears but I don't know. As for wiping her down when she comes in yes I can do her paws feet etc but it's more the ears. No infection as vet has checked. I had tried clartin antihistamine but they left her drousy

Re: Allergies
Hello and welcome.
So sorry to hear you’re having itchy problems with one of yours. Has this been going on for some time or is it only recent ?
You might well see a difference after the food change too.
What ear drops are you using ? Medicated or just cleansing ?

Re: Allergies
Hi from me & Katy The antihistamines will certainly help with the itchy feet & hive type lumps. I would use a medicated ear cleanser but if it doesn't work you may need to get an alternative from the vets.

Re: Allergies
I also tried medicated drops from the vet on her as my other dog got an infection in her ear. Mias ear cleared up within 4 days but Suki was still scratching and she was on them nearly two weeks. Hopefully the food change will help a little. Thanks everyone

Re: Allergies
Just cleansing drops. Vet wudnt give anything as she didn't see any infection etc. Yes it's been goin on awhile but I thought it was the area I walked them in so I stopped that but problem just continued. She always was a bit scratchy but seems to be getting worse as she gets older

Re: Allergies
You could try something called Thornit.
It used to be called Canker Powder, but they changed the name as it isn't just for Canker.
