Hi I'm new on here and wonder if anyone could give me some advice , my staffy chip, has very itchy ears and the vet has put him on a turkey .diet, he's tried him on steroids twice and he reacted really badly I'm at my wits end as the vet has said the next step would be to remove his ear canals but this horrifies me

Re: Allergies
Hi & Welcome to the Forum from Flo and me
Thornit powder might be worth a try. Has the vet run tests to see what the allergies are?
Whilst ear canal removal can sound horrific take it from someone who has a Staffy that has had this very thing done it isn't quiet as bad as it may seem. We rescued our Flo from Battersea and she had the canal removal done before she was Given to them so we don't know the exact circumstances, however, when we talked to their resident vet he explained that it was probably down to repeated sever ear infections.
Now the good news here is that my Flo copes really well and can hear some sound but in the main we use sign language so she does live an almost normal life. There is a benefit, if you like, in that loud noises like fireworks don't frighten her.
I would ask the vet to explore all avenues for the cause first, obviously this isn't something you would want to do if you can at all help it.

Re: Allergies
Thanks for your reply, the thing is he won't let the vet examine him properly we have to muzzle him as he is very aggressive towards the vet ,he won't even let us put drops in his ears he starts growling and snapping ,he's otherwise a very loving dog to his family but does not like strangers and takes him a long time to trust them, goodness knows what went on in his life before we rescued him but but at least he's. Very much loved now thanks again

Re: Allergies
I guess that could be a part of the issue too, if you can't get all the meds in the right place it'll just flair up again. Part of the snapping could also be that he's in discomfort and doesn't want anyone looking at the ears.
You could try Thornit powder, it's all natural stuff and claims some good results but ultimately I guess you have to listen to the vet advice. Total ear canal ablation (TECA) does seem a harsh way to cure the problem but if he's in distress then it is an option that should be considered, his well being is what matters in the end.
Do let us know how you get on.

Re: Allergies
Hi and welcome!
Very sound advice from Ian. If treating the condition is (understandably) so stressful, the surgery might be the least worst option.
Tell us more about your lad, where you got him from and things like that.
