Smile Hello - Newbie Here! Question about Sudocrem

Post by Sancho Tue Jan 24 2017, 18:01

Hi All!
I am new to this board. My family and I got Sancho on December 23rd. He is now almost 14 weeks old and is a smart little fella (he is our second dog we also have a 2 year old rescue Pitbull mix). Anyhow, Sancho has developed a little rash on his belly and after reading a few posts on here, I ordered Sudocrem. It arrives today, and I just wanted to now if there is any issues with it being toxic if he were to lick it. worried

I hope to get to know all of you on here. This has been the only website I have gotten good information from when looking up information on this breed, so thank you!!

Sincerely,
Sancho's Mom

Hi & Welcome to the Forum from Flo and me Big Grin

I have used Sudocreme on my girl with no ill effects, however, it does contain zinc which some say is harmful. My thoughts are that if it's safe on baby bums then small amounts on my pooch shouldn't be a problem though I will concede that babies don't lick their own bums raised eyebrows

anything with zinc in it IS toxic to dogs, but only in large doses. if your pup doesn't lick it often then it should be ok. after all, it's unlikely that you'll be using it for very long. however, coconut oil is often just as good, and totally non-toxic.

if the rash is still there in a couple of days, i'd see the vet for advice.

Thank you all for your responses. Poor Sancho is still scratching even after applying the sudocrem and had a rare mishap and peed on his linens overnight - he's been sleeping through the night for about a week now, but my husband may have given him too much water before bedtime doh . So, this morning his belly was extra irritated which is leading me to believe that it's either his urine or the detergent we've been using. I ran to the store and bought dye/perfume free clear detergent and washed his linens with that. Oh and I slathered his entire bottom with extra virgin coconut oil before running off to work.

He has a vet appointment scheduled for next Friday for the last set of puppy shots, so I am hoping it calms down so that we can hold off until that day!  I'll keep you posted.
