Newbie with question on staffs
Hi there,
Love staffs and this forum looks great, would like some advice please.
We have two male chihuahua's and are seriously looking into getting a staff bitch as an addition to our family in approx a year, as both me and my wife love staffs.
Here's some background on our two chi's.
Tyson - Age 7 - castrated
Tyson was our first dog of the family. He was a fiesty pup hence the name and used to be rather aggressive with some other unfamiliar dogs and people. He is a lot less this now but still has tendancies to have funny behaviour to non family members. However he accepted our next male chihuahua puppy and puts up with all kind of nipping and playing from the younger male chihuahua.
Amigo - Age 2 - entire
The baby of the family. He is a very affectionate playful but very submissive dog. Loves to play with tyson. Doesn't have any aggression in him and just lays on his back and submits at any conflict. However he does like to wind tyson up in a playful way to get him to play, stealing his rope toys etc etc
Also, one thing to add about the chihuahuas is they are not your stereotypical tiny chihuahua's. we have chosen the biggest of the litter each time and they are too big for showing etc and more the size of little jack russels. Both weigh over 10lbs and have thick limbs etc for chihuahua's.
Sorry for the long post. What we really want to know is whether a staff bitch would be able to fit in with our pack. Obviously we would not leave them alone together ever. I have hesitations about them playing too rough together and the chihuahua's getting injured.
I know personally of some staffs who don't like other dogs and I know that some dogs are just like that regardless of breed and socialisation etc, but how would they be with dogs in their own pack ?
Thanks.

Re: Newbie with question on staffs
Hi and welcome from me and the mutts
Some staffs are dog aggressive, and some aren't, but mostly, when introduced properly into your home and pack, there shouldn't be any aggression toward your other dogs. The staff will be a pup, while the others will be matured, and they will quickly put the staff into its place within the hierarchy.
Staffs can play rough though, and the staff would obviously have more weight behind her. The chihuahuas are small and could be injured, regardless of the staff only playing with no harm intended, but if like you say, they will not be left alone together, I don't see why a staff cannot become part of your family.

Re: Newbie with question on staffs
Hi & welcome.
Staffords can get on well with other dogs as long as they're introduced properly & supervised. Many members here have more than one, and several have other breeds as well.
I would be a little concerned about rough play, but if they're supervised & your staffy is trained well, you will be able to step in any time you feel it's getting a bit much & stop it.

Re: Newbie with question on staffs
Hi and welcome from me, Millie and Bella.
I have a staff and a lab x collie and they get on great so they can get on with other dogs. As long as you are there to step in if play is getting too rough then it should be fine.

Re: Newbie with question on staffs
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
If you are to get your Staffy from a rescue centre then ask if you can take your current dogs along with you when you go to see about the rescue dog. They will be more able to match a dog with your situation and give advice on training etc.
