Big Question! Can my neutered male staffy live in harmony with an unneutered male?
Big Question! Can my neutered male staffy live in harmony with an unneutered male?
My 3 year old neutered staffy rescue craves the attention of another dog. When he is with my cousins female bull mastiff he plays for hours, then when he comes home he gets so depressed he won't eat or drink for a day. I have the chance of getting another male staffy pup eat week, but I am reading in places that they can't be trusted together. Two males that is.
Does the fact that he is neutered negate it? The new pup would be coming from a strong bloodline and I might look to stud him eventually, but I will only bring him into our home if it is safe. We have no kids and are very Stern pack leaders. I just need some advice.
I feel so bad for my lad when he comes home from playing with other dogs. And I might add he is always dominated. Always rolls on his back if playing gets too heavy etc.

Re: Big Question! Can my neutered male staffy live in harmony with an unneutered male?
Hi ya Pete, welcome to the forum.
in short the answer is yes but with some provisos. Any introduction should be made on neutral ground to begin with to see how they react. When together you will need to watch carefully that any play doesn't get out of hand and ensure that the pup doesn't over step the boundries with your older boy. Normally the older one will teach what's acceptable.
You might well find that the older one becomes the teacher to the pup and they get along fine but only time will tell if that's going to happen I guess. As for Intact and and Neutered combination, I wouldn't be able to comment as I've not been in that situation sorry.

No experience in this but as Ian has said intro on neutral ground and a close eye to make sure thins dont get too rough, I dont know as the pup matures it may be a different entity altogether.

Its all about how you bring them up, I have 4 dogs, 1 male 3 bitches the oldest is the male who is neutered and the other older female is neutered, even thought hes neutered he is the boss, my 2 unneautered females have always been fine together, its all about how you socialise them,

Right. Yes I figured. We have plenty of dog parks around us we plan to frequent a lot and I work from home 80% of the time so the risks of them being idle on their own is minimal.
When we got our boy from the rescue he was very very testing. But with time and leadership he has mellowed but still has a bold streak in his eye every of and again. Especially in this snow! He hates it

Youll find that your older male will put the puppy in his place, but you do have to allow him to do so otherwise down the line they will fight as they will compete for top dog, its never about the sex of a dog its how well they get on with eachother, make sure they get a strong bond and that you dont pay more attention to one than the other, and youll be fine, for me neutering has never done anything for mine, it didnt calm them down it has just stopped them mating, also watch them with toys and around feeding time as if dogs are ever going to fight its usually over toys or food
