Typical Staffy Puppy Weights?

First topic message reminder :

Our pup is from a rescue, and their vet thought she is probably a staffy/JRT cross. Other people, since we have been walking her, think she is a staffy but one man asked if she was a JRT so maybe the vet is right. We know she may be anything from small JRT to large staffy size as an adult.

Just curious. Those of you with full-bred staffs - what did your pup weigh at say, 10 or 12 weeks? 4 months? 6 months? Just to give me some idea (not weighed her yet) of whether she is the same size as a regular staffy or a lot smaller?

The litter looked tiny to me when I first saw them at 8 weeks but not sure if this was because they are half JRT or because I hadn't seen such young pups for a while!

It's really hard to tell until at least 12 months when they should slow with the growing. He is a great looking little fella and pretty much all Staffy from that picture

Definitely a staff in my opinion I think like most breeds, nothing is set in stone regarding weights etc, they are what they are !

Kiki is a pure breed female staffy.
She weighed 5.2 kilos at 12 weeks, 7.2 kilos at 15 weeks, 9.7 kilos at 4.5 months and now 10.5 kilos at almost six months.
My guess is that she will reach about 16 kilos when she's mature.

my chase was 2.8kg at 10 weeks i dont know whether he just wasnt fed well from the people i got him off or he is cross a friend of mine has a SBT/JRT and said they look very similar but i dont believe he is cross just alittle small he put 2lb on in his first 2 weeks with us and people say they can see the difference in him already

It really is hard to tell at such a young age but it won't be long before that traditional Staffy shape comes through

Strange that this topic has come up,as yesterday we took Tess for a check up before being spayed on Friday.Put her on the scales and she came in at 16.5 kg at 10 months of age.She is 14 inches at the shoulder,bang on the required standard height,in fact she's not grown any higher since she was 7 months old.She was bred from KC registered show parents,is in great proportion with plenty of muscle developing,without an ounce of fat on her.In fact i'm quite pleased with that seeing that she is not a big eater,in fact she is very fussy.

Tess is doing fantastic. I weighed Rebel at the vet on Tuesday, he was 3.4 kg at 9 weeks old. I have to pick up more wormer in 2 weeks so I'll take him & pop him on the scales. I want him to see the vets isn't always huge micro chip needles & jabs

Chase is a lovely puppy

we are going to get chase weighed again this Thursday but i can tell the difference already since the last post but saying that he is a BIG eater currently we feed him pedigree puppy pouches and he has 2 of them a day plus bits and bobs of treats throughout the day if he poo's/wee's in right place etc but he would eat double that if we let him haha

to be honest, he should probably have his meals split into 3 meals a day until he's about 6 months old & then down to two.

p.s. pedigree isn't a great food, have you thought about changing him to a slightly better one?

No 3 meals will give him half a pouch in the morning then another half at lunch time then a full one around 5pm and thats it till next morning, what other foods do you suggest?

When looking at dog food I check ingredients. If the first is not meat I won't get it. My dogs are on Wainwright's from pets at home as it's grain free. Simpsons, James well beloved, fish for dogs, taste of the wild & Millie's wolf heart are good. For budget food Harrington's grain free is ok. Someone more experienced with foods will probably advise soon

I've heard so much good about raw & it seems more natural. I'm just so worried I don't know enough about it &would get percents wrong

To be honest there are so many good quality foods on the market these days you can't really go wrong.It's just a matter of finding one that agree's with your dog,and they like it.If you feed a good quality food be it complete,raw,or cooked,combined with plenty of exercise to burn it off you will have a fit and healthy dog.That's all that really counts.
Some people make the mistake of over feeding there dog in the hope that it will build them and make them bully,big mistake as a dog inherits there size and physique from his breed family.All you will do is put on extra pounds in fat,and that is the last thing we want.Always make sure your dog shows a good tuck-up of the belly and a visible waist line and you know your on the right track as far as his health and fitness are concerned.

if you're looking at feeding wet food (such as the pouches/trays) then you can't go far wrong with NatureDiet...

it's really good quality, with no added fillers such as wheat & other grains. works out about 83p a pack & each pack will probably last for all three meals at the moment.

I will be looking at the food because today i can see chases ribs at certain angles I know i should be able to feel them but not see them i thought i was feeding him enough could this just be that the food is crap not the quantity? I think i will keep him on pouches just not pedigree and get some biscuits aswell to feed in between see how he gets on

Sometimes when they grow taller puppies look slimmer. The wet food Gilly mentioned is really good

i have got wainwrights puppy food biscuits and meat so gonna try him on that think i will give him meat in the morning biscuits at lunch and meat again at tea time see how he gets on thanks for the advice guys

Well worth a try to see how it goes.Tess will never eat the complete kibble meals alone,we always add beef to it.

Seems to love the wainwrights food but then again he will eat anything however he is pooing double what he was before so we have reduced the portion size see how he gets on lol

You seem to be on the right track.As long as he is liking it and it is coming out the other end firm and formed you can't ask more.He looks a dear little chappy.

He is tiny Kit, everyone i see who has a staffy says oh he is small my boy was bigger at his age so i dont think he is going to be very big but thats fine by me he is a little nutter with a big attitude took him my mates who has 2 staffy x one is staffy x JRT and the other is Staffy x Pit and after the initial introduction they paid him no attention so he just ran around after them barking his head off for attention but when they turned attention to him he ran to me with his tail between his legs the big softy haha

Danny keep on doing what you are doing.As long as he is well fed,fit and healthy you can do no more.As for size don't worry,he will be what he is meant to be.I personally prefer to see a small well covered staffy rather than some of the high leggy ones that are on the increase these days.
You can expect it with a staffy x but a pedigree staff should be bred to fit the kc standard which is no higher than 16 inches at the shoulder for a dog.

I noticed recently that a couple of breeders in the USA are breeding 'miniature' staffords.

why can't they leave them alone?

People always have to mess with breeds, it makes me sad. I've noticed a few pied pug pups lately, I don't get why the kc are registering them, it's not a recognised colour

it's because the kc's constitution states that any pups born from two registered dogs of the same breed is eligible for registration. good breeders don't register them - they sell the pups for pet homes only & without papers. But pugs & french bulldogs are reallg popular at the moment so unscrupulous 'breeders' are breeding without thought for the standard & selling them as 'rare'.

however, as far as i know, the kc is now marking the registrations as 'colour unacceptable' (or something similar). Eventually they'll refuse to register them.

the same thing happened with staffords a while back & people were breeding merle staffords. Not now, though, as the kc marks the registration as 'unacceptable'.

I really feel sorry for the breeds of the 'moment' like dogue de Bordeaux's. Loads of puppies are sold then gumtree is filled with year old dogs. People breed them with zero thought

sadly, that's very true.

Agree with everything you girls are saying.But to be honest what is going on at present really hurts me.Being an owner,showman,and breeder of the staff for the past 30 years and seeing what has been done to our beloved breed over the past 15 years is just shameful.
But while you have people who are silly enough to pay up to £1000 in some cases to a back street breeder for a pup without papers or health checks it will continue to go on.My advice to anyone wanting a staff to love is go to one of the rescue homes,there are hundreds looking for loving homes there.On the other hand those who want a quality well bred pup,go to a reputable staff breeder who will sell you quality at sometimes half what you pay these back street breeders.

I think it hurts all dog lovers. Some people just see dogs as possessions. The good responsible breeders do it for the love of their breed & wishing to keep the standard
