Do Staffies need winter coats?
First topic message reminder :
I know it is nice and warm outside and we hopefully have months of summer left but I was wondering if Staffies need to have a nice warm coat for the winter??? Polly hates to be cold and although she doesn't mind rain, the other day when it was tipping down she was fine until the wind picked up and it got very chilly then she turned tail and pulled me all the way home
She is still only a pup and so hasn't got her adult coat through yet, but as she is our first Staffie I don't know what her final coat is going to be like and need some advice please

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Well, our girl, Pirate-Jenny needs wintercoat when it is under zero degrees. She has almost no fur on her chest and belly. What kind of wintercoat depends for example if it is wet och dry outside.
Our boy, Enzo, I dont know if he needs wintercoat. He has a lot more fur than Jenny, and he came to us in spring. I think we will notice if he needs it.
Some pics of Jenny in her different coats:

This looks amazing!
It was only 1°C here when we were out the other day, so it won't be long before it's snowing here too. Would love to get a cosy jacket like Jenny's for Violet for the snow, as she also has very little fur on her tummy

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
awww bless, that's some coats you have, everyone.
I remember years ago buying our boxers Barbour waxed coats and within 5 minutes they looked like seaweed hanging off them. Luckily Harry is used to wearing his wet weather coat.
I love the coats with legs warmers, but I fear he may be too big for them.
He will soon be on the North Norfolk coast every day, having runs on a
cold and windy beach.
his ears are just pink with spots on his thin layer of white fur.
In the summer they go red and in the winter they look pale and cold.
I'm not sure if he would wear a hood, if I had my way, he would have fur lined boots too.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
we need to buy one for Mambo for this winter, even now when it's not so cold he's already freezing...
do you know about any coats that will be OK to wear with a harness?
I don't think you should put harness onto the coat so something with a hole on the top for the lead to go through will be useful...

You can always cut a hole into a coat and re-stitch round the edges of the cut to tidy it up

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Saxon shivers if he doesn't have a coat on. Their fur is so short and they don't have much body fat (if they are a healthy weight) they don't have much to naturally protect them from the cold. Here's a couple of pictures of my little monkey in his sweaters:
Hehe, he's not a fan of the hood...

yes, I always thought that's the only way to do it... but maybe there are the coats out there for harness users?
the other day I found one coat in TKMaxx - it had a little pocket exactly on the back where the harness would go - I thought it would be perfect, as the hole would just be hidden in the pocket
but I never bought that coat, as it was still summer back then now I regret it, it only cost something like 10 quid and now it would be just perfect...
Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
just an idea... could you put the coat on first, then the harness? Or would the harness not be secure enough?
Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
I would suggest cutting a small hole in the coat and either blanket stitch it or buttonhole if you have a sewing machine.
There are also those those machines that punch a hole and ring them at the same time. May be the expensive option though.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
I've been using the button hole stitch on my sewing machine, but I've seen massive eyelets that you use for making curtains that go straight onto the pole that might work?

Laikadog I don't know where you are in world..but I get most of my doggie things off ebay ! Coats are normally pretty cheap to post as they don't weigh that much ! I just got Jethro a really good raincoat , I gave the above black one to Winston to wear! I will try to post a photo of it............

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Callie shivered outside in the spring when it was in the 50s (she was a little tiny thing then). And she overheats in the summer....they're not exactly all season dogs, are they?
I'm thinking something fleecy for the winter...love that pic of Molly.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
I've ordered a red one and a cammo one from Barking Macks. I found them through a link to eBay someone posted here. They are really nice to deal with and are adjusting the belt sizes to ensure Fiver gets a good fitting raincoat. They also put in a harness access hole too which is a great idea.
I'll let you know what they are like when they arrive but the customer service has been great so far

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Hey all look fantastic, i particularly like the darkgrey one with the two stripes on the back. I'd like to get one for Stanley but can't find them. He's about 20"/22".
Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
I met someone yesterday wwith an Equaflleece top on their Terrier and they said the chest area was a bit baggy. It looked like it would be nice as a longjohns type thing.
Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
My dogs do have coats but i try not to put them on instead i let them put on a few pounds of body fat they're still a healthy pet weight but not like they where in summer.
example: they where bottom left now theyre top right of this picture
i like to keep my dogs healthy and in peak condition but no need in winter a bit of insulation is needed.

My two love the cold and come alive in it, throwback to there dads side i guess. double coat and thick furred feet, out on the walk today they were seeking out frost patches to roll about in. you should see them in the snow lol bloody nutballs. flip side is they hate the heat which gives my arms a rest.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Chaos loves his thick winter coat, and his ideal is to sit with it on next to the Rayburn, looking very woebegone that he has to go outside for a walk. Of course once he's out he loves the walk, but if maybe he could have his walk brought inside so he can keep warm that'd be ace!
