Do Staffies need winter coats?
I know it is nice and warm outside and we hopefully have months of summer left but I was wondering if Staffies need to have a nice warm coat for the winter??? Polly hates to be cold and although she doesn't mind rain, the other day when it was tipping down she was fine until the wind picked up and it got very chilly then she turned tail and pulled me all the way home
She is still only a pup and so hasn't got her adult coat through yet, but as she is our first Staffie I don't know what her final coat is going to be like and need some advice please

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
billy hasnt really been out in the cold either, he did not have one last year, but would love to get him a lovely snuggly one for this year.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Ty has a coat that he wears of a nite in his crate if it gets really cold but I havnt taken him actually out in it. I took him out last winter in the snow with out a coat but I had a blanket in the car so he could snuggle up after playing.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
well my old staffy Jethro has heaps of coats. even though we live in Australia, on a winter's day when it only gets to about 16, he is shivering and shaking like crazy. Let's face it.. staffies don't have very thick fur !! He has a coat he wears at night.. an indoor fleecy one and a waterproof one for those wet winter days.. ( plus his thundershirt for when there is a storm ! ) Man oh man.. no wonder I am broke!! hahaha.. And little Winston has a coat too. In the mornings when I put him outside around 8am he was always shivering.. now he is toasty warm and happy to go out and play!

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
I personally would say for our england climate staffs dont really need coats unless very young old or ill etc. But its up 2 you, if your polly doesnt like the cold then a coat is fine

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Bandit used to feel the cold, especially if it was wet & windy, so he had a wax jacket! But we only used it in really cold or wet weather.
Dempsey's the same.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
My girls dont really get on well with the cold and unless they are actually doing something physical will sit there and tremble with a sad look on their faces. They have little coats for really cold days, Skibadee has a sheepskin lined flying jacket and Tali has a pink bomber jacket but she burst out of it incredible hulk style now cuz shes got too big!!

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
I dont think they need coats but Mazda does shiver and curl up really hates the cold so she does have some fleecey hoodies and shes a oldie now and Zero had a couple in the winter as he was so small when I first got him.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
aww Mazda makes the most beautiful model !! and look at little Zero racing through the snow....

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Oh I love the 2nd pic of Mazda
I tried getting one for Kita last year as it was a cold winter in Adelaide, but I struggled to get one that fitted her properly. She's a little short in length for the neck/chest size, Vanessa can you recommend any type over here?
The other thing that concerns me is Izzy dragging her around by it (she's a bit rough on Kita at times)

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Aw the pictures of all your dogs in their coats are great, I think I will get Polly a waterproof jacket and see how she goes, for the last 2 winters we have been snowed in and I'm sure she is still going to have tons of energy to burn off so running about outside will still be something she will have to do, both of our other dogs have got thick enough coats that they don't mind cold weather too much.
Thanks for all of your replys

Thanks Nikki, I might have to take the brat for a little car trip tomorrow then and see what they have in there. I did have to stop my daughter getting her a pink diamante collar in there when she first came to live with us

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Well we went but didn't get her a coat as I couldn't find one we did stock up on food and treats though much to her delight, and she tried one of the detistix bits they were giving away as trials but spat it out in disgust at the poor lad behind the counter, much to his amusement.
I will get her a nice coat once they get their new stock in though, I think if the past 2 winters have been anything to go by she will need one.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
the 2 coats that my Jethro was modelling were both bought second hand!
I have bought some great coats over the years off EBay and also Oztion ( Aussie's answer to EBay )
Yes it is funny all the Aussie dogs are such wimps when it comes to cold weather!!

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
neither of my two ever wear coats in the winter here , if anything id say shady could maybe do with socks , cold bothers his feet after a while , but if i did put anything on his feet he'd only rip it off

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Molly's fleece looks gorgeous, I can see I am going to have lots of choice when we finally get some dog coats in the shops here.
Nicolalouises I walk my dogs out on the fens, and the wind that blows over them can be very cold at times, our other (non staffy) dogs have got thick coats and even they want to cut their walks short and get home quick sometimes so I am assuming Polly is going to take a look out of the door and bolt for her cage on cold days....... and then plague the daylights out of everyone with all her energy afterwards

[b]My 2 year old Staffie has very little fur on his pink tummy. Harry is used to wearing a wet weather coat but I want a really warm winter one as we are about to move to the uk coast.
He refuses to go out when it's cold, I need a coat he feels very warm and waterpoofed in. Any ideas please?

I just cudn't resist showing you what inca looked like when she wore her first coat !!! As you can see from the look on her face she wasn't very impressed ..
..
She has a plain black coat now ... and she still has the same unimpressed look on her face now when she wears it ... !!

awwwwwwww bless her, at least it keeps her warm. Inca is so pretty but you can tell by her tail she didn't feel too impressed with the coat. Harry always feel important in his and is not at all bothered by it.
I don't think burberry is his style, it's more mine. Harry is more of a primark dog but he has to have the best I can afford.
I'm trying to find a good sheepskin coat to keep his little pink tummy warm, he'd go for synthetic. Dogs have no taste lol !!!!

Haha !!! believe me i wouldn't have got her burberry if it i had chosen her coat... I just happened to mention it to her nanny (my mum !) an she turned up with a burberry coat ... I didn't wanna offend so just stuck with it...
Her new coat is just plain black but she's like harry and has thin fur herself ...so she needs abit of help to keep warm ... xx

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
We got Polly's latest coat in a factory shop, it is plain navy blue and fleece lined with a nylon waterproof outer bit, it doesn't wrap around her tummy though just the straps to hold it on.
We have a Range store just opened near to us and they have some stunning dog coats which are more like jumpers and hoodies, they would protect bare tums, but not very practical for Polly though, she loves romping on the fens and fields so anything underneath her would get ruined in the brambles and bracken.
It will be interesting to see how she does this winter, she will be one at the end of January so hasn't really seen a winter yet. She doesn't mind being out in the rain, but if it is windy she sits down and refuses to move.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
I like the thought of Polly in a polo neck. Harry would not be able to wear just a wooly coat for the same reason as Polly.
Bill my, husband is going to take Harry to a large pet shop today to see what they have. I'll keep looking on the internet.
I may have to resort to looking on ebay for a sheepshin coat and getting it made into a an under coat with his rain coat on top of it.
You'd think a hardy staffie wouldn't worry about the cold but to see him shivering isn't nice.

Loving all the doggies and their coats, they are just too cute
I'm going to get Lola one very soon, but have found that i will have to modify it for her harness.
i don't think they need them, but they sure look good and make us as owners feel were doing a good thing keeping our doggies warm and dry.

Re: Do Staffies need winter coats?
Violet will not wear a traditional dog coat with the straps under her belly and round her front, but she loves to wear t shirts and hoods, so I have spent all of yesterday coming up with a new sewing pattern so that the belly part is waterproof, whilst it goes on like a normal t shirt. Unfortunately though, I am waiting on more sewing machine needles coming through the post as I just snapped my last one
