Mange :-(
Apparently Jellybean has mange. The vet said the mites in the skin scrape are in fact dead, but apparently somehow there are still some that are causing the spots of fur loss. We have her on Advocate monthly and we apply it religiously, but apparently it's not strong enough.
I sure hope insurance covers the baths she will need! I might look for a free vet clinic that will do it. Is there any other way to treat it?

Re: Mange :-(
It's Malaseb that is usually used for mange. Yes, it's strong smelling, but it does work and often quite quickly!

Re: Mange :-(
oh it will be way more than £60. My vet says it's £25 for the bottle they use and then £37 per visit for 5 visits. So it's about £250, and that's not including the £88 I paid today.
So I'm wondering whether there is a home treatment or bath I can try first.

I don't suppose you have any pics of the fur loss? I went through similar with my first, I can't help as she grew out of it, just interested Xx

Re: Mange :-(
sure, it looks like this:
i can't find the last link i posted about it, but on there, i took the suggestion to add salmon oil to her diet, which we've been doing for about 3 weeks now and it's been helping a bit just to improve the overall quality of her skin. we have also started giving her nature diet, one package a day with a cup of arden grange lamb and brown rice.
we originally only went to the vet today because of some weird lump that developed behind her ear that started oozing and then another one formed and that was oozing, both blood, not some sort of infected looking puss. no idea what's up, and the vet didn't have anything useful to say, but ended up scraping for mites, which she said were all dead but supposedly she needs the mange bath anyway. i'm not convinced, not necessarily only because of the cost but to be honest it DOES seem about the money for them. so i'm not sure what to do.

Re: Mange :-(
Why do you have to take her to the vets for the bath? Can't you do them at home?

Re: Mange :-(
Hiya Lori... My girl Sky was recently diagnosed as having Demodex an she is also on the Advocate drops but she is having them weekly and not monthly like your girl... Maybe try going to weekly or fortnightly with the Advocate drops and see if you get an improvement then....
My other girl Inca also had Demodex when she was a pup but she was put on the Promeris drop which sadly she reacted to it an puffed up (she looked like the Michelin Man)..
Its so annoying watchin your pup change in appearance when they get Demodex but thank god Sky is finally getting her fur back an is no longer itchy (with the help of Piriton..)
Good luck hun you will get there eventually..

Re: Mange :-(
i asked the vet if we could do it at home and they said yes but the shampoo was really poisonous. i would much rather do it at home. i have been looking up anti-fungal and anti-bacterial shampoos online and came up with one called DermOpt. Ever heard of it? Might try that before the vet thing.
she's on advocate already, but i asked the vet we usually go to (as we went to a different branch today) and they said maybe she needs to be on advocate weekly instead of monthly. sounds like what you said Sue, thanks. maybe we'll try that.
i'm hoping insurance will cover it otherwise, but they won't tell me until she's been treated (and hence it's been paid for) and they can read the medical records. LOL jack asses hahahaha

Re: Mange :-(
I swear by this shampoo http://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-shampoos-veterinary-shampoos-c-1124_637_889/etiderm-dog-shampoo-200ml-bottle-p-678
Helped sort my girls skin probs. I use it on my pup too.
If either of mine had demodetic mange I'd go advocate every 2 weeks (on prescription) and bath every 4-6 weeks in a good shampoo such as the one I mentioned.
Get her on a good hypoallergenic food too. Salmon oil each day will help. X

Re: Mange :-(
OK thanks for that Jackie! Might give it a try.
What would be a good food? Arden Grange "says" it's hypoallergenic or some such, and looks like it's made with good stuff but I think we might totally go over to Naturediet and Fish4dogs, with adding salmon oil and supplementing with a bit of raw and veg.

Re: Mange :-(
oh and of course the next question is how the heck do I get her to stand still to get the bath? she is afraid of the advocate, no joke - she gets this scared little look on her face and gets into a corner and then finally, pathetically gives in. i try to massage her with a special hand-brush glove and she runs away from that to the corner as well. i can't even imagine what a bath would be like.

Re: Mange :-(
Not had it for ages but the old boys with gun dogs used to use apple cider vinigar as a suppliment to cure it. They used to mainly have sarco from foxes but have been told it helps both strains.

Re: Mange :-(
The treatment for mange is a wash thats stinks like parafin and I forget its name (aludex ) maybe, vets used to let you take home and bath but cause of its potency you now have to take them in to have the treatmen.t
Etiderm is great its equivilent is maleseb and its to treat secondary skin infections

Re: Mange :-(
My girl hates advocate being applied too, I get hubby to distract her with treats/stroking whilst I'm lining up the squirt ! It works lol
I feed my 2 on Wainwrights complete trays ( from pets at home) it's a good mid range hypoallergenic food. They also have a pack of Fish4dogs Salmon mousse between them everyday. Raw egg twice a week and sardines twice a week.
I bath my pup (7mths) every 4 weeks at the moment in Etiderm shampoo. My girl gets bathed every now n again as n when.
I'd go bm to ur vet or call them, confirm it's demodetic mange and suggest advocate fortnightly. With baths every 6wks or as n when and many a change in food. I know how destructive skin probs can be ! So sometimes u need to take control and do whatever u can ur end with support from ur vet. X

Re: Mange :-(
As long as its definately demodex mange then its more an immunity thing. I would just religiously apply advocate and as everybody has said a good hypoallergenic diet will give her body the best chance. As her immunity rises you will find that the hair starts to grow back as her body overcomes the mites and their numbers dwindle.

Re: Mange :-(
thanks so much everyone! I'm going to talk to the other branch's vet today to confirm we can do weekly or 2x a month advocate as well as our own wash and changing her diet. her skin already looks a bit better with the addition of the salmon oil and nature diet instead of all dry food. fingers crossed!

Re: Mange :-(
our vet said to do Advocate every 2 weeks and come in for a check up, and I'm going to rub her down with DermOpt skin spray/conditioner as I'm not sure we can bathe her and the recommended shampoo is Rx only. so I'll try this first and then maybe some Etiderm if the spray doesn't work. let's hope we don't have to do months worth of baths!!
