Mange
Sash is really badly suffering with mange.
She Had it aince we bought her home and its so sad seeing her scratch constanly, even though it doesnt bother her otherwise
We've been given 3 lots of treatment to put on the back pf her neck amd we bathe her in oatmeal but its still bad, she has sores on her belly on her sides under her legs and on her face
We also have allergy tablets but they dont do anything.
Vet said he can give her an unlicensed drug thats used on cattle if nothing else works so hope that clears it but in the meantime, Is there anything anyone else knows that we can do for her?

Re: Mange
Oatmeal shampoo won't do anything at all, I'm afraid. I take it the vet has given you Advocate? If so, it can take several treatments before it starts to show an effect. They normally prescribe a special shampoo for demodectic mange, but it's very harsh & the vets might think that she's a bit too young for that.
The only other thing I can think of is Camrosa Ointment.
http://www.camrosa.co.uk/
Give them a ring - they are a fairly small, family run company & they are very helpful (or always have been in the past, anyway!).

Poor little thing, hopefully you'll start to see some results from the treatment soon.

Did you get her from a breeder? If so, you should make sure that the breeder knows about it, because Demodectic Mange that severe in a young pup is often hereditary and could also be a problem, not only for the other pups in her litter, but any future pups the bitch might have.
All dogs have the Demodex Mite in small amounts, they're born with them. Some pups will get a minor attack before their immune systems are mature enough to keep them under control, and this doesn't normally need any treatment & will go away on its own. But a full on attack like your pup's is unusual, and will almost certainly have been passed on by the bitch.

I read of a home made solution,
one third water

Re: Mange
Seriously, that won't kill the mites. All I can think it'll do is make your dog smell funny & leave its fur oily!
Camrosa Ointment is good (I don't know what's in it) and so is Advocate. There's also a special shampoo that you can get on prescription from the vet, but it's very harsh & they'll often avoid using it if they can.

Re: Mange
Molly has demodex and we are using Aludex, a prescribed shampoo but its pretty nasty stuff. She has to be bathed in it once a week for three weeks. I hate using it on her as it seems to make her very lethargic Such a horrible thing demodex.
I think ivomec is the alternative that your vet is referring to. You can't use it on collie breeds as they have a gene which makes them overly sensitive to the chemical. Mange is just a worry - full stop!
We got Moll as a rescue pup and she was fed on shards of bone and who knows what else for the first 14 weeks so I'm guessing her immune system didn't stand much of a chance.

Re: Mange
Unfortunately not, just saw an ad when looking and they were in the price ramge we had.
The vet had said it will have come from the mom when she suckled which i already had awareness of anyway.
Yeah have been told she is a bad case
Looked up many home made remedies and i guess its pot luck if they do and which ones work really.
To be honest the vet hasnt really mentioned a shampoo, maybe briefly so guessing they dont like using it. Just mentioned this unlicensed drug used on cattle cant remember a name. But side effects can be nasty :/
Says he has used it on many staffies though.
Oh god poor moll i hope shes better and her bad start hasnt affected her.

Re: Mange
I'm surprised at a vet sugesting an unlicenced treatment. Just from a personal viewpoint I would turn it down unless I was absolutely desperate.
If the Advocate doesn't work, do give Camrosa a ring, though.

Re: Mange
The unlicensed drug seems to be recommended by quite a few vets. I've been doing lots of research as the shampoo for Moll is absolutely horrible!
Its an agricultural treatment normally used for cattle, pigs etc but at the correct dosage can work very well in the treatment of the mange in dogs.

Once the mites are under control you'll start to see an improvement in her skin & fur. It might take a little while, but there shouldn't be any lasting damage.

Poor Moll! How many more shampoos does she need? Do you have to let it dry on her? Horrible in this weather.
Seriously, give these people a ring...
http://www.camrosa.co.uk/
I've heard about some truly amazing recoveries with it - they've actually used it themselves on farm animals/dogs/cats for years. I remember seeing a before & after pic of a pig with demodex that was treated with Camrosa & it was quite amazing.

Re: Mange
It was her second on sunday and the vet has said to give her 5 in total and see where we are at. The mites are dying etc but I don't know it i want to put her through the shampoo again.
You have to make up the solution in a well ventilated area and then put moll in the bath and put the solution all over her, all over her face very carefully as well. Various instructions such as do not smoke, do not use a hairdryer.... You then have to let her dry naturally and put the head collar on so that she can't lick herself.
Our house smelt like a sheep dip! She just laid in her basket with a fleecy blanket covering her and looked so miserable. Normally she is like a lizard with that tongue of hers but not even one lick!!
It felt like I'd poisoned her, she even growled at our other dog following the treatment on sunday (and she has never done this before). Watson seemed to sense she wasn't well though and was really good with her, he even tried licking her (which we had to stop him doing as the solution is poisonous!).
Alas the lovely mange! I'm not too worried about long term effects of the mange because as soon as the evil critters are killed the fur grows back
I shall give the camrosa people a call tomorrow Thanks Caryll .

I think if they arent going by the next vet visit it will have to be it.
It puffs all her eyes up and she goes red raw and then scabby all over, under her legs get spots and they are puss filled :/
That shampoo does sound rough! Poor moll
Its horrible when you just want them better but theres no nice way about it

Is the unlicensed drug called 'Panomec'... If it is then its classed as a cattle wormer and Inca was treated with it when she had demodex when she was around 6 mnths.. It was put in her food daily (0.3ml) and she was on it for approx 3 wks before we saw an improvement in her coat.. She never reacted to it and we could eventually reduce the dosage from daily to every 3 days then reduce the amount to 0.2ml an so on an so on.. Her fur began to come back and eventually she was weaned of it ...
Inca couldn't have the Advocate drops at the time she had demodex because she was also suffering with ringworm at the same time .. which meant she had to have a bath every 4 days in some smelly shampoo that we had to leave on her an we couldn't dry her either so she wasn't a very happy little puppy for quite a while ..

Re: Mange
Im unsure he didnt say a name :/
She goes back next week so will have to see
Some days i look at her and think its clearing but others she looks bad again.
I know the fur takes a while to grow back and maybe thats what im looking at but she still scratches a lot.

Re: Mange
Poor little mite (no pun intended!).
Obviously wait & see what the vet says - if he does another skin scrape then he'll be able to see if the treatment is starting to work or not. Don't forget that any skin irritation can take a while to settle down, even when the cause has been eliminated. Have you ever shaved off some hair & then found that it irritates the hell out of you as it starts to grow back? Or a cut or graze that itches like mad as it's healing?
