New puppy trouble!
Hey guys, im new here and hoping for some advice!
I had my puppy a few days ago, she's 8 weeks old. a brindle staffy I also have a 6 year old staffy bitch called tilly.
Tilly will not leave the puppy (bella) alone at all, and bella often tries to nip tilly, how can i stop this? I'm unsure how my dog will react so i try to keep them away. When sleeping, Tilly comes and cuddles bella and vice versa (so cute).
So my number one problem is the biting, my hands and feet are covered in bite and scratch marks, this needs to stop .
Secondly, with this being my first puppy, i'm unsure how to house train her, I keep trying to put her on training mats but she just rips them up and later pees on carpets. Are there any tips?
Also, I could do with knowing the best way to train her with the sit, stay and paw commands. I have been trying but as soon as i have a treat she jumps up and bites me - she won't concentrate or behave!!
I know its typical puppy behavior but is there anything i can do about these little things?
Thanks xx

As far as the training mats go,i dont like them, sometimes they can help and sometimes they just promote pee'ing in the house. if you can i would take him out the garden straight after meal times and give penty of praise.
For me aswell personally,i never tried to learn my puppy any sit paw commands etc untill he was a few months old, they can be very excited and hyper at that age, make sure to always reward the puppy when shes calm and ignore when shes not

Re: New puppy trouble!
Hi and welcome to the forum from me and the zoo xx
Unfortuately I've not kept two together but when my Sister in Law first had Buster (her staffy) and he was a pup he was the same. Wouldn't leave my Knox's face alone with his biting. Knox was quite well tempered about it however it was a very hot day and he lost his rag and snapped at Buster. Only just a warning bite but caught Buster on his nose and made it bleed. We cleaned it up and it was absolutely fine but Buster definitely didn't learn as he went straight back over to try again! *rolls eyes*
Have a look at http://staffy-bull-terrier.com/stop_your_staffy_puppy_biting and hopefully that should help xx

Re: New puppy trouble!
hia from me and sasha ,unfortunately pups do not have very good manners and dont know their little teeth really hurt!your older dog will put up with it for so long and will then tell the pup off!keep your eye on them both and step in if you think the pups over stepping the mark, make sure the older dog has some space if needed

Re: New puppy trouble!
Hi Tasha and welcome! Although I haven't had two dogs at the same time, it sounds to me as if Tilly is excited to have a puppy in the house and just wants to play with her (and vice versa).
At 8 weeks old Bella is very much a baby, still settling into her new home, and when not sleeping will play with anything - you and Tilly included. And being a baby, that will include mouthing. The link already given will help you a lot with this but don't expect overnight results! If Tilly is nipped too hard she will no doubt tell Bella that she's gone too far - this is way puppies learn bite inhibition.
As for house training, you will get a lot of "mistakes" before Bella cracks it, so be patient. Take her outside after every feed, playtime or sleep and praise her if she "goes". If you catch her just about wee or poo indoors, scoop her up and take her straight outside. If you find wee or poo inside that you haven't noticed her doing, or are too late to catch, clean it up without comment.
We've all been through this, so don't despair! She's very young yet and will learn!
Personally, I wouldn't bother about obedience training just yet - give it her few weeks to settle in and concentrate on the house training and laying the groundwork in bite inhibition first.

Howdy from Jed and I, it will take awhile for toilet training etc just be persistent and eventually your pup will learn, it took me 2 months for Jed to stop biting me and making me bleed ---- those little teeth sure do hurt

Re: New puppy trouble!
oh I remember those little needle-sharp teeth so well! It does gradually get easier - just always have something on your feet! Lots of chew toys everywhere - put a toy in her mouth when she tries to grab you.

Re: New puppy trouble!
Hi Tasha
I had a resident Yorkshire terrier when I got my puppy staffy Toots 3 weeks ago.
I was worried too about the introduction. I decided to let them get on with it, and after several occurances with Toots biting Dottie too hard, she soon realised that this would stop the play.
They now play really well together. It's also helped Toots to understand she can't bite me too hard either.
When she mouths my hands, I tell her 'gently' and she's responding.
Your older dog will teach her. Be patient

Re: New puppy trouble!
Welcome to the forum from Bane and us
We had Bane from a young puppy too so have been through everything that you are going through It just takes time and patience and lot of repetition! There's some great advice above and so many friendly and helpful people about if you ever need help or just a place to vent about your puppy troubles
As for the training side of things, we started with Bane straight away, but it was more of a way of being able to bond with him and keep his little brain occupied throughout the day.
Try training before each meal as she will be hungrier and more willing to work for food! Also if she is jumping and getting excited, then sit would be a good first command to work on so that you can get her to calm down before trying other tricks
