Shocked New puppy trouble!

Post by njr1234 Mon Jan 27 2014, 12:05

Hey guys, im new here and hoping for some advice!

I had my puppy a few days ago, she's 8 weeks old. a brindle staffy Smile I also have a 6 year old staffy bitch called tilly.

Tilly will not leave the puppy (bella) alone at all, and bella often tries to nip tilly, how can i stop this? I'm unsure how my dog will react so i try to keep them away. When sleeping, Tilly comes and cuddles bella and vice versa (so cute).

So my number one problem is the biting, my hands and feet are covered in bite and scratch marks, this needs to stop Sad.

Secondly, with this being my first puppy, i'm unsure how to house train her, I keep trying to put her on training mats but she just rips them up and later pees on carpets. Are there any tips?

Also, I could do with knowing the best way to train her with the sit, stay and paw commands. I have been trying but as soon as i have a treat she jumps up and bites me - she won't concentrate or behave!!

I know its typical puppy behavior but is there anything i can do about these little things?

Thanks xx

This is the exact same experience we are having.....I have a 9 week old blue brindle called Belle! I have never had a puppy before and man! its hard work lol! we also have a Border Terrier who is 6 called Ruby.....Belle bites on the side of Ruby`s fur, she does`nt mind but will tell her who`s boss after a while........we are paper training and have many accidents.....on the positive we had her since 6 weeks and the improvements are very good......she loves to bite everything! my daughter who`s 8 took a nip to the cheek as Belle went for her Braids!
Its a hard balance but worth it in the end I hope/pray/think!

With the house training you just need to get into a routine of taking her outside every 30 minutes, after every nap, after every big drink, after play etc. I kept a little diary for a few days just so I could note down the last time they'd been to the toilet and you kind of just get to know their routine.. And they eventually learn to go and sit by the door when they need to go. You do also need to watch her like a hawk so you can catch any accidents before they happen. Very tedious and very frustrating but you will get there in the end Smile
I didn't start teaching Alfie to sit/lie down etc until he was about 10/12 weeks ish when he was a bit less crazy and excitable, but everyone does it different Smile we've also done puppy training classes which were great so you could maybe consider doing those too Smile xx

Hey, great idea on keeping a diary! I will try to use this tip, because my puppy even though doing her things outside, bus still manages to mark something at home Smile
