puppy trouble
Hey all.
Some advice needed please, my pup is now 12 weeks and the older shes getting the worse the biting is getting!
We have been firmly saying no and turning away or movin her away but she gets snarly n still nips. Also she is now allowed out and sometimes on walks she gets very loud and aggressive sounding with biting the lead or one of our shoes. Its just a concern as im trying to make her a good dog, im doing great with obedience training so far and have managed to successfully get her sleeping in crate (breeder had been spoiling her)
Iv spoke to others with them and theyve said they thought at first they had done the wrong thing but they grew out of it quick.
Thanks in advance

Re: puppy trouble
With Blaze we yelp , say ouch and firmly say NO for the first week it did not seem to be working but after that he just seemed to know and stopped now and then he will try still but as soon as we say No he stops. We also used to tell him bed/put him to bed and leave the room.

Re: puppy trouble
If you haven't already done so, please read http://staffy-bull-terrier.com/stop_your_staffy_puppy_biting as this give lots of helpful information.
Puppies will mouth/nip. The "snarling" is probably only a puppy play-sound - what great fun this is!
Don't get scared, all puppies go through this, and read the link.

Re: puppy trouble
Honestly the biting/nipping will get better.. All pups bite/nip it is just how they play.. You need to pick a good method of training and stick to it, always... Consistency and patience is always the key with puppies.. Read through the link Lynda posted there is some great advice on there and just be patient, it will improve They snarling/growling is just play, a pup that young will not have any aggression.. She is most likely just over excited at all the new things to see when out on walkies

Re: puppy trouble
At 12 weeks your pup is not being aggressive! The snarling and growling is part of his idea of "play" and he just doesn't understand yet that this is not acceptable behavior! You need to teach him this and it doesn't happen in a few days or a few weeks! It takes a long time and even once they know that it is unacceptable, they still want to be stubborn and try to push the boundaries or not listen to you!
When he nips say a firm "no" but dont scream or yell because they can get more excited by that. If he doesn't stop nipping turn your back to him and completely ignore him for a minute or two, or until he calms down. If he is still nipping at you then pick him up calmly and quickly and place him in another room for a few minutes ( a puppy safe room obviously). Do this every single time! If you are consistent and patient it will start to improve. Don't be frustrated if it doesn't work right away because it takes awhile. Some pups catch on quicker than others..but eventually it will work. He is honestly being a completely normal puppy and this definitely doesn't mean he isn't going to be a "good dog" as you said in your post! At 12 weeks he is seriously just a baby and it is quite possible he doesn't even understand that this is a bad behavior at this point.
Gwen is 6 months old and she still nips us at times when she gets overly excited! When she was 12 weeks old she bit through my boyfriends ear! We were both covered in bruises and cuts from her constantly nipping us! I know its frustrating and at times it can seem like its never going to get better but it does! Having a puppy is HARD work, not just cuddles and kisses! Once again your pup is not being aggressive he is just being a pup and wanting to play and this is his idea of play! He doesnt know he is hurting you and he also doesn't mean to hurt you! Good luck stay positive!

Re: puppy trouble
If you follow the advice given, with patience, persistence & praise it will get easier, it does seems like never ending at times and we all remember those early puppyhood days of being nipped lots, be consistent and it will lessen I promise
As for the noise/growling, it's not agression, staffy's can be very vocal when playing, I know darcy sounds like she's growling during play, but she's not, far from it, she's just excited good luck.

Re: puppy trouble
Just one more thing to bear in mind. At 12 weeks old, your pup is beginning to teeth. His gums will be sore, his puppy teeth will be getting a little loose & will be irritating the life out of him! The only way he knows to relieve this is by biting on things, and I'm afraid you will be right in the firing line!
So, as well as following the great advice you've already been given, try getting a clean, preferably white tea towel, tie a couple of knots in it, soak it in clean water, and freeze it. Then let him chew on it. The cold will ease his discomfort & the knots will help him get rid of that chewing need. Obviously you'll need to supervise him with it so that he doesn't rip bits off & swallow them, but it'll help. You could also try freezing a banana or a carrot & letting him gnaw on those!

Re: puppy trouble
Great advice! The frozen tea towels are great and cheap! Gwen loved them and would chew them for hours!

Re: puppy trouble
I agree with the great advice given above ... will add frozen kongs to the list of great teething chews. I make up a couple of different ones and place them in the freezer each night for the next day, Chiquito loves them, they are cool on his gums and give him a 'legal' chew to gnaw on during the day

Re: puppy trouble
Keep up with the training and advice given. Be consistent and it will all come together. Mixture if teething and learning bite inhibition.

Re: puppy trouble
Hi so sorry iv not been on! My internet stopped working but im sorted now. Thanks so much for the replies. Its been a heck of a weekend, puppy was being watched by my mum and wen i got home my mum wasnt speaking and wen i said whats up she said the little one was jn the garden with her and decided to latch on to her leg.
I ended up staying at a friends with her for my mum to cool off.
She is a very vocal pup she barks loads wen u are preparing her food but i just get her to sit and wait.
Iv spoken to owners who have all said the same about the biting being bad at the start but it gets better.
My mum has now started the oh what if it was a child and bla bla bla.
I have been distracting her attention to toys etc wen she does it or gettin her to sit or lie down

Re: puppy trouble
Make a start with the training advised above and I'm sure you'll start to notice a difference, play biting/mouthing etc is completely different to a dog showing aggession so I really don't think you have anything to worry about, keep us posted on your progress

Re: puppy trouble
She is still only a baby and the techniques suggested will help but they won't fix it overnight, give her some time, they are quick learners but it takes a while for them to stop, what is to a pup, a completley natural behaviour
