"Toe nails"
Not had Wingo a year yet and she's needed her nails trimming three times.
She's out for at least 90 mins a day - usually more like two or three hours - of which about a third to a half of that time is on concrete, so I'm a bit confused here.
Have never really needed to trim the nails of my previous dogs much, if at all, and my current foster's nails are super-short and staying that way.
But Wingo's seem to grow like talons - maybe she's crossed with an eagle.
Is this normal for an EBT-type? Hers are great thick things that wouldn't look out of place on a much bigger dog - they dwarf those of my staffy fosters.

Re: "Toe nails"
Rockys nails seem to grow fast too he's not an EBT though and he gets about 2 hours walk a day some of that being on hard surface but all of it.
I thought it must have been a terrier thing them having longer nails than some other breeds, great for digging in the dirt with. Rocky has his trimmed at a local dog training centre about 2-3 months.

Re: "Toe nails"
We pay careful attention to Dempsey's claws, as his also grow very quickly. Trouble with him is that the two middle claws on his back paws push together slightly, so if they get too long, the claws push together even more and make his toes sore.
Probably an EBT thing!

Re: "Toe nails"
harveys grow a hell of a lot more and quicker then Chance's and he is a staffy, and they are super thick but he just won't have them cut no matter what, so i file them on some sand paper

Hmm, maybe not so unusual then.
I know the first time I went to the vet, apologising Wingo's nails were so long, the vet didn't think they were that bad.
Maybe I've just had a run of dogs with short nails in the past.

Re: "Toe nails"
I've recently been wondering if dogs nails have growth spurts like ours do? I've never needed to trim Daisy's but they are looking a bit longer at the moment and we haven't been walking on concrete any less than normal!

Re: "Toe nails"
Just saw this thread and wondered if any of your lot chew their toenails? Nico tries to do this, his nails are a bit longer than usual ( well what I'm used to) but from what your saying it varies anyway!

Re: "Toe nails"
Darcy's seem to manage themselves but on occasion like saz says they do seem to grow faster at times.

I'm going to take her back in again for another trim.
I think that's the problem though - the vet only trims a minimal amount off.
My other dog - the foster I have here with me - has super-short nails.
They get walked the same amount.

Re: "Toe nails"
Black nails are the worst, I've found. Always supposing your dog will allow you to trim their nails, it's impossible to see the quick and once you've nicked that they will never trust you again! Plus, they're as hard as tungsten.
White nails are generally a bit softer and wear down easier on pavements etc, plus you can see where the quick is.

Re: "Toe nails"
A lot of people prefer to use files or sanders for dark claws, so you can track how much more needs to come off. If you look at the paw, long claws will each have a little groove on the underside of the nail. This groove appears on the 'dead' area, where there's no quick. This area is safe to cut. You can also keep an eye as you clip. When the nail starts to get softer, it's time to stop.

Re: "Toe nails"
My comment about the softer part of the claw might be a bit vague, on second thought. If you're using this method, shaving off a bit of the claw at a time will slowly cut closer to the quick. The softer area of the claw, which appears just before the quick, will actually look different as well. It's usually a grey/pink circle through the centre, so once you reach that spongy area, it's best to stop.
