Staffy male. Help please!!
Hi, Just looking for a bit of advice. I have a 2.5 year old male staff, hes a great dog and has been in the family since a pup. My only concern with him is his weight. Its been up & down over the past few months, he puts weight on then loses it drastically. His head and everything else is fine, its just the weight at the back that drops off him. Hes fed 2-3 times a day (big bowls) has regular water and runs round all day. Ive had him at the vets recently, they told me to take a sample of his urine, which is still an ongoing thing! (im not sure if any of you have tried doing this but i can assure you it is not easy!) Hes been on a BARF diet, just dry food, just meat, tripe, pet mince.you name it hes had it..still nothing! The vets also said to feed him just on puppy dry food but ive stopped that as it wasnt helping him at all.
Has anyone else had a dog like this? is it normal? What advice or tips do you have? I really want him to put his weight back on and he is a lovely looking dog!

Re: Staffy male. Help please!!
have you had his thyroid checked to see if it's under or over active?

Re: Staffy male. Help please!!
it sounds like he isn't on a food for any real length of time - I would choose one and stick with it.
I have problems with keeping weight on one of my dogs - I can feed him 3 times a day, all the treats going, but he will burn it off.
I would get some bloods taken to check for thyroid function and to make sure there are no other problems.

I'm thinking it's possibly a thyroid issue too. Worth getting checked if you haven't already

Hi & welcome to the forum.
Has the vet taken any blood samples? If so, what were the results? Have they checked his thyroid levels?
When you say he keeps losing & gaining weight, could you be a little more specific? Does his exercise or food change at these periods? Is he as active at the times of his weight changes, or is he hyper or lethargic?
What are his poos like? (we always seem to come round to poos at some point on the forum! ).

Re: Staffy male. Help please!!
I hope your little one gets sorted soon, are there any other symptoms such as the state of his poo?
I had lots of trouble with my staffy and what I thought were food intolerences for a long time, the vet did lots of checks and found no issues, the only time he didn't appear to have an issue was after he was castrated, which involved a period of fasting before the op and special wet food diet for a week after, (The special diet would have cost a fortune, but my vet told me it was just a basic plain chicken that was easy to digest) so we went back to bascis for a few months, only chicken and corn dry food, and then only gradually over 6 months introduced wet chicken again, and veg and over a further 6 months we are now finding that adding other meet, that he appeared to be intolerant to before is no problem for him.
Don't worry about dog's getting bored with food, aslong as they are getting good quality nutrients and there are no underlying health issues.
But I still find adding new foods can be a long and gradual process.

My reply to you all....
His food intake is not irregular, he eats like hes never been fed if im honest! He has regular walks.
When his weight goes downhill he is still his normal active self, running about playing and will still eat. Alot!
When ive changed his food or diet it was changed after a long while of him being on that certain diet so vets & other dog owners/professionals suggested something different so I tried that.
I havent had any blood tests for him but thanks for your replies & i will consult my vet about checking his bloods etc.
Any other suggestions or advice is still welcme
Thankyou

Re: Staffy male. Help please!!
How many meals a day does he have?
It might help to split his food into several small meals so that he gains full advantage of the nutrients?
