lead chewing
Hi.
Any advice on lead chewing. Skye has chewed through her lead. We were out walking today and then She trotted off ahead of me as her lead snapped. Thankfully she walked well beside me all the way home. This is the third lead she has gone through now and I don't know how to get het to stop chewing them x

Re: lead chewing
Logan can be a lead chewer when he is a bit excited. He was very bad as a pup. The way I dealt with it was as soon as he started to chew I'd stop walking and correct him with a firm "no!" and when he let go I'd start walking again.

Re: lead chewing
How about a lead made from chain with a leather handle. might break the habit?

Re: lead chewing
Not a fan of chain leads, simple training will stop it.
I have a friend who gets through them and wonders why, when I meet him for walks he'll let the dog carry the lead!! Well its never gonna learn that way

Re: lead chewing
Must admit my 2 were the same and I used chain leads but they are so tough on your hands when shortening etc . Thankfully they both grew out of it so nice softex stuff now As far as the training is concerned then totally agree and a good firm no , leave and sit are good here , just sit him down until he is calm (and obviously fantastic treats )

I just don't like them personally, any dog can be trained from chewing a lead, just my personal choice.

Got to agree with Janey, there. I don't like them either! Bull breeds are so strong that a chain lead can do real damage to your hands if they suddenly pull! But I just don't like the feel or the look of them, either. I much prefer the softex ones - they look nice, they're strong & they don't rip my hands to bits!

Re: lead chewing
I agree, had chain once with my last dog and had same problem with digging into hands and being cold and lifeless. Just thought it was one suggestion to solve leads being bitten through. I make my own leather leads. So much nicer to hold if you can get some soft leather.

Re: lead chewing
It can sometimes help to stop a dog chewing the lead, but I'd be worried about him hurting his mouth!
You're very clever, making your own leads!
