Jogging
I've been trying to get Bacon to go on Jogs with me, but it has been difficult. When I start jogging he gets excited and tries to jump up on me. When he's not trying to do that he crosses back and forth and tries to circle me!
Has anybody gotten through this? He's 9.5 months old right now, maybe it's too soon for a jogging partner?

Re: Jogging
personally he is too young to start structured jogging with, i believe it's best to wait until about 18 months.
I do go running with my two but they are 2 and 3 , but i fasten them both on my running belt and as soon as i start running or jogging they pull ahead up front like i taught them to

Re: Jogging
I'm with ella, I wouldn't start jogging until later on. However, tips that worked for me...
Use a jogging belt and lead, and have the dog on a harness so you are both more comfortable. To try and combat the jumping, you can do either or both of these. Go ridiculously slowly, just to get him used to the more bouncy movement, gradually building up the length of time you run for, and the speed at which you go. Also, have someone ahead of you that can help keep him focused on going in a straight line.
Give it time, and he'll probably get the idea eventually.

Re: Jogging
I think before you start jogging you will need good walking skills. Try what the others have mentioned, but yes he is too young at the moment. You don't want to put too much strain on him at this age.

Re: Jogging
Yes, i figured he was a bit young. Personally, i'm not in the best of shape and I really think i'd do damage to myself before any harm was done to him. I just want to get him used to the idea in short spurts.
Will wait a bit and use the tips mentioned!! Thanks all.

Re: Jogging
Not really much more to add than others have already put, it was a slowish build up for me and Ledger, to begin with he still wanted to stop and sniff or lift his leg all the time but now I am fitter he trots along quite nicely ahead and I'm planning to take him to a Canix event in Feb
I have a Trixie hands free lead which is elasticated so there is a bit of insurance if he does stop suddenly, he also wears a harness when we run so he knows he is ok to pull. But still every now and then he decides we aren't going fast enough and will spin back take hold of the lead in his teeth and start sprinting

Maybe me and you can shape up together and start the jogging for puppies and unfit people thread

Re: Jogging
Too soon for proper jogging. You can have short jogs on soft ground as long as you let them rest in-between though, I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I job with Loki on the field now and again, only like 20 seconds at a time (for my benefit, not his ), and obviously he thought it was playing when I first did it so I'd stop as soon as he started jumping. Eventually (ie after a few months ) he got the hang of it and realised that we don't jump up, we just run together.

Re: Jogging
Hes to young to take jogging you should wait until hes about 18 months, when he is older try using a short lead for better control and make sure hes fully emptyed before you start.

Agree with others, think it's a little too early! Tried jogging with Biscuit once.. it was amusing to say the least
