allergies and treats
I have had to take Buster to the vets this morning as he had a limp. While the vet was checking him over he said that it looks like he has some allergies as inbetween his toes/pads is very pink. I said that I hadn't notice him chewing at his feet or anything as I know that this can mean an allergy to something. He said that as it doesn't seem to be bothering him at the moment to just try some evening primrose in his food daily and also try change his food to something like wactol (?? or something similar, maybe waltol, can't read his writing! lol) which is just salmon and potatoe. I have just changed him onto fish4dogs, will this be ok? He said not to give any traets for a week or two, then introduce one at a time and see if it is ok. What can I use as a treat for training? There is no way he will do anything for me if he doesn't get a few treats, and he is being really naughty at the moment so I need something!? I was using liver mainly, occasionally sausage or cheese. Will Liver be ok to keep using? It is only very small amounts he has.
He also said that pollens can bring them on so to keep him out of long grass etc. He had been in a field of long grass at the weekend, and now I feel like a bad mum! Also where OH works there are quite a few patches where it is overgrown. While on the phone to OH on the way home he said that he had noticed Buster chewing his feet alot at work but they just thought it was a strange habit I told him he should've told me, he never does it at home so I had never noticed! This makes me think that it may be more to do with the pollen and things though - and could also possibly explain the sudden rash that appeared on tuesday after he lay on the lawn when it was freshly cut?
Well, my main concern at the moment is the treats, so any tips for those would be good, and any others for everything else

Re: allergies and treats
A lot of dogs are sensitive to grass sap, so when the grass is cut, they suffer!
I can't see why you shouldn't keep him on fish4dogs, there's very little in that that would react, I wouldn't think.
You can get hypoallergenic treats from Pets st Home & the like - I'm pretty sure that James Wellbeloved do them - see if you can give those a try.

What food have you been feeding and for how long? If you look at the list of ingrediants you could use the first vegetable in the list of ingreadiants as a treat since he is likely tolerant to that

If your dog's used to vege training treats then that's fine & would work well. But i know that Dempsey would look at me as though I was mad if I tried to use veg as a training treat!

Re: allergies and treats
He was being fed on JWB before we changed him over. I'm not too sure how Buster would react to being given veg as a treat, but I might try it, he eats most things (and he does seem to have a thing for banana's! ) I will also see what treats they have in pets@home.
I'm hoping it's not from food though, I don't like the though of cutting out alot of his treats as he does look forward to them, but I will try it for a week or two, then slowly re introduce things and see how he gets on

Re: allergies and treats
Wafcol if that's what he meant isn't as good as Fish4Dogs so keep him on that. It's fish and potato so very unlikely to cause allergies.
As far as treats go, dried liver is great. I also just use bits of their normal kibble as a reward. Or if you want something different maybe get a small bag of Orijen 6 Fish and use those as treats?
ETA: I'm sure small amounts of cheese will be fine but I'd steer clear of the sausage as they often contain wheat.

Re: allergies and treats
It might've been wafcol. I said about the fish4dogs, but he said it is one he hadn't heard of. I would rather keep him on it than change his food again so I'll stick to it and see how he gets on
So the dried liver should be ok? I normally buy a pack from tesco and it will last me a week or more depending on how much training we do through the week. Sausage was only accasional so it is no problem cutting that out.
Where do I get Orijen 6 fish from? I do like to use different treats sometimes to keep his interest.

I'm sure the liver will be fine
I've never seen Orijen in the shops so just buy it online, have a google search, there are lots of websites that sell it, zooplus is one, viovet is another.
Ziwipeak is another idea, it's just dried raw
