Hi. I have just discovered this site and have spent over an hour reading the comments. i am so glad to find that something like this exists and am extreemly impressed with the helpful advice given. I re-homed an abandoned Staffie from the local cat and dog home 4 weeks ago. She is a beautiful tiger like brindle and was leaping about 5 ft in the air in the kennel so she had to be called Tigger! I would really like the benefit of your advice with some of the issues I am having with her. I must say, in fairness to her, the pros far outweigh the cons. I will not go into detail now as I am not used to using forums or computers and I would like to see if this message appears and that I get a response before writing all the things that I would like to ask. I really hope it works!

Wow, did not expect so many people to respond so soon! Ok, I have a lot of questions so to save having a ridiculously long message, I wont ask too much at once. My first problem is that Tigger does not let me know when she wants to go to the toilet. She gets between 2 and a half to 3 and a half hours of walks a day and I have an enclosed garden that I give her regular access to. When these options are available she does "go" outside and nine times out of ten that is what happens and of course, I praise her for it but some times at night and in the daytime she does it in the house with no attempt to let me know she needs out. My response is to show her what she has done, say no, then put her outside and tell her this is where you do your pee's and poo's. I do not and would never hit her but my tone of voice lets her know I am not happy and her behaviour shows she knows she has done something wrong. Is this the right or wrong way to deal with these accidents? If it is wrong please advise a better method. I realise that as a rescue we can not know what her previous homelife was like and I intend to be as loving and patient as she needs but I just dont understand why she would not give me some sort of sign that she wants to go out. I look forward to hearing your advice, thanks.

how old is the dog. trainer pads in the house are good idea theys ave on the amount of mopping. train the dog to go on the pad then do the usual by getting closer to the dorr then take the pad outside for the dog to go on. this is ok for puppies but we dont know how old your dog is. like you say though your tone of voice is enough to let her know it is not acceptable. like you say though you dont know her background or what situation she came from. we could all hazzard a guess but we wouldnt know for sure so you will just be starting from scratch and reteaching her the correct way to do things. like you say patience is the key dont stress her or yourself too much she will egt to know you and your ways and vise versa in time right now just concentrate on building a loving relationship and the rest will fall into place. good luck

I use pads myself as well but alot of people don't like them. Unless yu catch her in the act I'm nt sure that showing her what she did wrong will be of any help. They have pretty short memories. At your dogs age she should be able to hold it longer so there may be a UTI or some other medical issue involved. Be sure to completly get rid of the scent when she goes inside or she will be attracted to go in that area again.

Patience and consistency will pay off Big Grin

She's still settling in, to be honest.

You obviously don't know what sort of house training she had in her previous home(s), so she might not realise she's doing wrong, and once she's done it, there's no point saying "No" cause she won't be able to associate the 'doing' with the 'telling off'.

I'd go right back to basics with her. Take her outside every hour or so, and when she pees or poos give her lots of praise & fuss. If she does her business inside, don't make a fuss, just clear it up without a word. Use a non-amonia cleaner such as a diluted biological washing powder/liquid, as amonia-based cleaners tend to smell similar to pee (to dogs, that is) & they could encourage her to pee inside.

I think all she needs is a little patience & to be shown where to go. She'll be fine once she gets the hang of it!

Thanks for advice. I think she is too old for training pads and goes outside mostly so I will just stick with positive reinforcement and hope that time is all she needs. I have other problems that I need help with but I will ask them with a new heading as this one is very long now.
