rucsac carrier for staffy
Hi There,
my blue staffy Bo has been having terrible trouble with her left rear ACL.... we have an appointment to see a surgeon but not till the end of august.... meanwhile we have a holiday booked... which was to involve hill walking etc..... can anyone recommend a rucsac - front or back... suitable for a staffy (16kg).... there are loads on the market... but for her size (small) the weights only go up to 9kg??
can anyone help
thanks so much in advance
joe

Re: rucsac carrier for staffy
Hello and welcome.
Hope your vet consultation goes well but in the meantime we need to get you equipped for your holidays.
First word of caution I would say is be careful how much time your girl will be spending in the rucksack and is the position comfort ?
It would appear that larger/heavier dogs are carried on your back, front facing (beware kisses in your neck ! ) with their bottom in the bag.
A quick search has given this type of model (XL up to 23kgs). It’s cheap and available quickly but I don’t know what it’s worth in terms of quality
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Woolala-Carrier-Backpack-Veterinarian-Approved/dp/B082V1WX23/ref=sr_1_13?crid=38DATFPZQOMWV&keywords=large+dog+rucksack+carrier&qid=1658945819&sprefix=large+dog+ruck%2Caps%2C210&sr=8-13

thanks for your speedy reply...... i hear you re the time.... i tried one of the front carrying bags and it was a bit of a strain on the old back!!! but she seemed very comfy..... but i think you are right about carrying her on my back!! i had seen the woolala one on amazon.... im a bit concerned about her legs being tucked in and uncomfortable for her especially with her injury..... but they dont seem to do back packs with their legs out??
thanks again in the absence of any specific recommendations i think i will try that one for size.....
cheers
joe

Re: rucsac carrier for staffy
I think a backpack with legs out might make you tip forwards to compensate the weight so your girl would be lying back with legs in the air position … not sure that would be super comfy for her or you either. Probably why bigger dogs are “piggy back” position.

Hope you had a really good time on holiday.
Would love to know if you found a rucksack and to have your review
You never know if/when it could come in useful !

Re: rucsac carrier for staffy
hi there,
yes great holiday thanks....
i bought one of the rucsac carriers but it was too small.... and im not sure she would have been keen or comfortable even if it had been the right size.... i bought the correct weight size.. but with her bulky neck it just wasn't big enough.
we also bought a trolley..... but she wasnt happy going in that!! so we just did a lot less walking!!
shes having an op later this month on her LHS.... but during the scan they noticed the deterioration has started on her RHS... so she will need another op next year.... poor wee girl!!
thanks for your help though.
cheers

Re: rucsac carrier for staffy
Glad you enjoyed your holiday But I have to say it's so hard to find anything to fit a Staffy right
I had trouble just trying to get a coat to fit Katy, she's too deep in the chest, tall & big neck. The coat that fits is so long it keeps all her tail dry
Please keep us updated with her progress

Re: rucsac carrier for staffy
Plan b holidays often end up better than what was initially planned
Thanks for the feedback, good to know.
Good luck to your girl on pending ops.
May I ask what kind of operation is planned ?
