Pitbull or Staffy
Hi everyone ,
I am brands new to the forum and relatively new to the world of staffies (having been introduced to them via a friend who has one )
Needless to say ,I fell head over heels and spend more time with their dog than I do with them .
I really want to buy a pup but as i have a child with disabilities ,I was wondering if this is a good choice !
Also , can someone please clear up an ongoing confusion -IS A PIT BULL THE SAME AS A STAFFIE?

Re: Pitbull or Staffy
Hello and welcome!
The staffie is known as the nanny dog as they are so good with children and a great family dog. I don’t know what type of disability your child has but you need to ensure that they are respectful with regards to the dog, whatever the breed.
And no, a staffie (staffordshire bull terrier) has nothing to do with a pitbull, which is a type of dog rather than a breed.
A staff/AmStaff (american staffordshire terrier) is said to be a showring pitbull and it does have a studbook.

Re: Pitbull or Staffy
Actually the type of disability my son has makes him VERY respectful, interested and fulfilled by ALL types of dogs and indeed animals . I was more concerned with how the dog would be WITH HIM ,as I am not an authority on dog breeds but I am on my son's condition .
Thank you for the information on dog types and breeds ,I shall endeavour to work out the obviously subtle difference now between am staffs and pit bulls .

Re: Pitbull or Staffy
Hi & welcome.
Basically you have three dogs...
1. Staffordshire Bull Terrier
2. American Staffordshire Terrier
3. American Pit Bull Terrier
The Staffordshire bull terrier (Stafford or Staffy) is the smallest & is known for a kind, even temperament (as long as it's bred & brought up properly).
The American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff) is a much larger with a slightly less 'bully' look. The AmStaff is a banned breed in the UK as it is the show version of ...
The American Pit Bull Terrier is similar to the AmStaff, but with a greater range of height/weight. The Pit Bull is banned in the UK (as are all Pit Bull 'types'')
All three are known to be good with people provided they are bred by responsible people who take care to mate only good natured dogs, and are trained & exercised well.

Re: Pitbull or Staffy
Thanks for this , it's made things clearer .
Just a point to ask ,I know lots of people with am staffs , how are they getting away with it if they are a banned breed .

Re: Pitbull or Staffy
Are you in the UK? If so, those dogs are not AmStaffs & if they are (which is doubtful), they are running the risk of having their dogs seized & probably PTS. Unless, of course, they are already on the 'exempt' register - but very few are allowed to go on it.
The law's an ass, but it's the law.
