1 year old rescue
Hi all. A friend in London has rescued a lovely 1 year old boy. It's too much for her and she's offered him to us. We live in the Welsh border so lots of room for a lively dog. I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on the challenges of training a dog this age with little training so far. My main concern is sheep. He's a lovely dog and seems to like me. He's confident so I think he's been neglected rather than abused. Thanks

Re: 1 year old rescue
Hi & welcome.
Staffords are very intelligent & will learn quickly, but they are also very sensitive souls & need careful, fair handling.
Are you asking if he can be trained not to run after sheep whilst off lead? My own opinion (and it's probably just me) is that dogs should be on lead around farm animals, even if it's a long, 30 foot line.
Even highly trained sheepdogs can sometimes forget themselves!

Re: 1 year old rescue
Hi from me & Katy, a 1yr old can learn as well as a pup. Keep the training rewarding & fun for him. As for sheep there are places that do courses to get your dog used to being around sheep so I'm sure there should be something near you

I'm in agreement with Gilly - no dog (apart from a trained & supervised sheepdog) should be off lead around ANY livestock.
