Jenson - 1 year old Sharpei with Hope Rescue
Jenson is a 1 year old tan Shar-Pei cross and is currently on foster in Caldicot.
The Jenson Fact File
Dog Status: Good but boisterous
Cat status: Very good
Child status: Good but again boisterous; can be rehomed with older dog savvy children
House training: Very good
Home alone: May be suitable for full time workers but will need settling first.
Basic training: Very good
Jenson might be a year old but in many ways is still just a big puppy and will need a confident owner to continue training this stunning boy.
Jenson is in foster with other dogs and has been good with dogs he has met both male and female. However Jenson just wants to play and doesn’t know when to stop and cannot or rather doesn’t want to read the other dogs reaction. He plays nicely with dogs that are matched to his energy levels and want to play. His play style can be physical with barging and pouncing and if the other dog doesn’t want to play Jenson reads the warning growl as part of the play and continues. His manners are improving day to day as he is being supervised and guided about what are suitable boundaries. He has learnt that inside is not play time and does settle down nicely. This guidance is something his new family will need to continue working on as Jenson matures.
Jenson is currently living with two cats, one confident and one nervous. Apart from occasional interest if they move quickly he is very good with them and the cats have accepted him into the family very quickly.
Jenson LOVES people and gives the best cwtches ever. He can be very gentle and calm when interacted with in a calm way. Jenson went to Caldicot Castle for the Jubilee celebrations. He watched a band, saw kids, watched fireworks, and collected fans by the dozen! Everyone that met him fell in love with him and wanted cuddles, which he took all in his stride! Jenson has met children and behaved very nicely. He needs to be carefully supervised as he can be very boisterous so we would advise children over 8 years old who are dog savvy.
Jenson has separation issues. He is currently being crate trained to deal with this. He’s perfect at night and goes to bed and settles well. He can become anxious when left during the day and will sometimes howl and whine. This is improving daily but training will need to be continued. He has been able to be left for 3-4 hours without problems and he’s worse when you’re at home and he can hear you. As long as Jenson is given plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and family time he would be suitable for full time workers with a break/walk mid way through the day,
Jenson has been walking very nicely on the lead. This may need a little tweaking in his new home as has the potential to walk you rather than you walk him. Jenson sits beautifully, knows paw, and will lie down. He also knows “bed” (go in your crate). At the moment Jenson thinks everything’s a game. It looks like he’s had lots of rough and tumble play in the past and has had few boundaries and will mouth with dogs and people, although this happens much less often now. This can also make his leave and off the sofa commands hit and miss. This is now approached using vocal commands and/or a lead looped around him to guide him off the furniture rather than hands as he thinks you’re playing. Jenson needs consistent rules, he is very smart and eager to please; with time and patience he has the potential to be training to an amazing standard. He is very fit and agile and would be brilliant at agility etc. Jenson has not shown any possessive behaviour, but he has always been fed separately to the other dogs to avoid any issues. He does however enjoy teasing you and/or other dogs with his toy. Jenson travels very well in a crate in the boot of the car and has dealt with journeys of an hour with no problems.
Jenson is very mischievous and his fosterer has had to “Jenson proof” any area’s he’s left unsupervised, by removing books, paper, cardboard and toilet rolls!! (His impression of the Andrex puppy leaves a little to be desired, although his “wasn’t me” face with shreds of toilet roll stuck to his mouth is hilarious). He can and will pinch food off counters when your backs turned but wouldn’t steal your food if he thought you were looking! Jenson should have been called Houdini! He can easily open doors with long handles, and jumps like a frog. Gardens and front doors need to be very secure. Jenson has not escaped but frequently “lets himself in” where he might not be wanted.
In summary, Jenson would suit an active family with dog savvy children, with or without cats. He will need further guidance with some aspects of training and lots of time spent on exercise and mental stimulation. He’s got amazing potential for training/learning tricks/agility etc. He’s still very puppyish so expect equal measures of mischief and laughs from this lovable clown. Jenson has very quickly become part of the family and he will be a wonderful addition to a lucky family.
All Hope Rescue dogs are neutered (if over 6 months), vaccinated, flea treated, wormed and micro-chipped prior to adoption. If a puppy is not old enough to be neutered then this must be carried out at the owner’s expense when old enough, and the relevant form completed by the vet and returned to Hope Rescue. A homecheck will be required, and you will need to come and meet the dog with your own dogs and family. Hope Rescue rehomes throughout the UK. A Pre-Home Interest Form can be downloaded from www.hoperescue.org.uk and should be returned to dogs@hoperescue.org.uk
