Aggression with a bone
My dog has access to bones/toys throughout the day after we have been on walks or in the evening. When he is approached in any way, he growls continuously and loudly until we move far away from him. This is causing issues in the household. Any advice?

Re: Aggression with a bone
How old is the dog?? I had the same problem before but it wasn’t with a staffy it was a way smaller dog. He wasn’t able to hurt us even when he tried so it was easy to eventually get him to stop by sitting next to him when he chews, stroking his back etc untill we eventually started putting our hand on the bone and if he growled he was told no and we took the bone away. Eventually he would let out a growl then stop so he’d get a treat when he didn’t growl. This might be easier said then done though, since if it’s a grown dog you might get hurt if you sit beside him while he’s trying to be like that...
i would definitely not let him have the bones just lying around so he can have them whenever he wants if he’s aggressive with them, he can’t Think that if he growls at you you’ll just leave him alone to chew the bone, it should be taken away from him if he’s misbehaving. Maybe that will eventually show him that he is not the boss and can’t just tell you to go away like this...
If it is an older dog, was he always like this, or did it start recently? Maybe something happened that lead him to believe he’s not safe chewing the bone and he needs to protect it?
Hope someone more experienced is on later and gives you better advice.

Re: Aggression with a bone
Hello and welcome.
Good advice given by lunathestaffy.
Can you maybe give us more details around the situation when he’s basically being possessive about his bone ?
What is his character like in general ? Is he laid back and easy going or a bit more feisty with a bit of “attitude” ?
Is this new/recent behaviour or has he always done this ?
Your profile says your dog is 2 1/2 yrs old but have you had him from weaning or did you acquire him older ?
Have his habits or routine changed recently ? Maybe this behaviour is since COVID confinement ?
