Re: My first Bone
OK OK OK>.. panic stations
I gave Holly another small peice of Lamb breast yesterday ( ribs) and she went to town.. she loved it.. chewed it etc...
BUT this morning when we woke up she had a real mess in her crate..
she had the runs, it looked almost pheglm -ish and slimey and there were peices of bones that looked rather sharp
what happened here.????/
I am not game enough to try aagain ...
She was covered in poo, as was her bedding...
that was all sorted this mornign first thing.. washed and the blankets are being washed in hot water and disenfectant.. but OMG is scarred the &^%$ out of me

Re: My first Bone
She hasn't chewed it properly, and it's sat in her stomach undigested & upset her a little. Giver a break for a couple of days & then try her with a piece of spine or neck. The bones are softer & she won't be able to swallow big shards of it. If you have a butcher near you, ask him if he can save you a piece of spine - he'll think you're mad, but........
Of course, it could be that her stomach is not used to dealing with bone & you may need to wait until she's older before introducing them again.
Don't forget, though, that not all dogs will take to a raw diet. If it doesn't suit her stomach, then you'll have to give it a miss & just give her the occasional marrow bone as a treat.

Re: My first Bone
No, she only messed because she had to - it was probably so messy because she'd tried to hold it for so long!
As I said, give it a break for a while - let her stomach settle & then maybe try some spine. If it happens again, then she's either too young, or maybe she just just doesn't suit a BARF diet.
Not the end of the world, though, and the complete dry food gives just as much nutrition!

Ok thanks Caryll... god is is frightening.. I am sure once she is a bit older and has a better jaw she will be ok..
I will try again in a few weeks/months and see what happens..
it has upset her a little too... she was very nippy this morning.. maybe the 7am bath pee'd her off lol
Also she used to listen to the "leave it" and walk away.. now she has another few chews and i have to really go over and yell...
I feel like i am correcting her most of the time...
can u suggest anything?.. will this make her hate me in the end?

No, it'll make her respect you. As long as you do fun things with her so you can give her praise as well, she won't worry about the corrections.

Re: My first Bone
ok cool.. i do plenty of fun things with her.. but she was sulky this morning.. maybe she is still a little upset.
she ate her breakfast and i have been out with her for about an hour and half... she still hasnt been to the toilet... i popped her back into her crate and she is sound asleep.. i guess this will be the test to see if she goes toilet in her bed..
I am sure you are right that she just held on so long it was a mess...
fingers crossed

Much better thanks,
I am not sure now if it was the bones....... I feel STUPID... STUPID.... but when i weighed her i wrote down 8.3kgs..... not 3.8kg.... not thinking i read the amount for worming at 12 weeks as i was told to..... so i overdosed her not thinking...
wasnt until puppy preschool tonight that they told me she had put on weight and was now 4.2kg!
then it suddenly blooming hit me.... i made her sick... combined with the bones the poor little darling was crook

Re: My first Bone
Whoops!!! Sounds like that could have been it. I'd keep her off the bones for a while anyway to let her jaws & teeth strengthen & let her stomach recover.
Glad she's ok now though.
That reminds me, I've got to get Dempsey some worming tablets - I think he's overdue, so I'll have to check my records!

Re: My first Bone
Holly had another bone yesterday... she was a little bored with all of us in the pool.. so I tried her again... OH took it off her and she growled.... but then he made her sit and gave it back.... When it looked to small i went up and asked her for it.... grabbed on tight as i thought there would have been a tug of war... but she just gave it up and went running around the yard like a psyco...
no up set tummy last night and a firm poo this morning.. so i think it must have been the over dose of worming
I wont give it to her all the time, just now and then for a treat or when she is bored.

Honestly for a few weeks its like your speaking to a brick wall wearing earmuffs! They will ignore you and push it and go on like they are death, one day though it just clicks and you start to realise 'Wow the puppy hasn't bit me for over an hour!!!' RESULT!!!
