7 month old staffy weight
Looking for a bit of help please folks! My 7 month old pup is currently weighing in at 22kg. The vet has recommended putting him on a diet which I have done but my raw food supplier is saying that the vet is not taking into consideration the fact he is a big boy, he's raw fed and his dad is 32kg!
He's been on the lesser food quantity for about a month now and we've upped his exercise but his weight is still exactly the same. Don't know what I'm doing wrong! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
Hello and welcome.
First question is what breed your pup is ? No staffy should weigh in at 30+ kgs ...
Breed aside, you vet will be judging on your pup’s overall silhouette, overweight is not any good to a growing pup’s articulations. Between vet and feed merchant, I personally would give more attention to medical advice than feed merchant ?
Do be careful about overexercising a pup too, don’t forget that at 7 months old, he’s still very much a baby.
If his weight has not moved over the past month, he should have slimmed down a bit as growing up. It’s better to have a pup slightly lighter than heavier.

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
Thanks so much for that! All i needed was for someone to explain it rather than just give opinions!
My pups dad is part staffy part mastiff hence the reason he is so heavy lol!
According to the raw recommendations, he should be on 1kg of meat per day but I've brought that down to 700g and as of today, I'm trying him on white meat only. He gets an hour's walk in the morning then a shorter walk later on which the vet has said is great.

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
If you're raw feeding, at 7 months he should only be getting about 3% of his body weight, so about 650 grams over 2 meals a day.
What sort of exercise is he getting? Being part giant breed, he probably shouldn't be over exercised. The norm is 5 minutes per month of age 'forced' exercise (ie lead walking on hard ground), and then as much as he likes free running/playing on soft ground (ie grass/sand) as long as he is allowed to rest whenever he wants. However, with giant breeds you should absolutely avoid high impact exercise (jumping/twisting/up & down hills etc) until at least 18 months. In fact with some giant breeds it's said that no running at all until 12-18 months.
That being the case, you could probably drop his food to 600 grams without a problem.
Can you feel his ribs without pressing & does he have a distinct waist?

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
He does have a distinct waist but I do think that his ribs could be a bit more prominant. He doesn't get treats or anything so in my opinion it's purely too much meat.
I do spend a bit of time walking him and we have a huge back garden for him to run about.
Think I'll try cutting his meat to 600g and see how we go. He has taken a stretch so I do think he is a bit leaner. Just a shame the scales aren't saying the same lol.

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
Isn’t he lovely in your avatar !
But your scales ARE telling you there’s a difference as his weight hasn’t increased over the past month.
My Nifty took 1.5kgs between her 6th and 7th month. I’m sure that if you measured your boy, you’d see he had grown upwards for the same weight

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
I originally had him at the vets to see about having him neutered. They have said it's a good idea but they won't even consider it till he's under 20kg. This is all well and good but it's not easy to get the weight off him when he's still growing.
I'll persevere with cutting his meals and check him again in a month and see if there is any difference. I'm also gonna check his height so the vet has a full picture of what's going on.
Thanks guys for all your help

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
Well, I'm glad, in that case, that the vet thinks he's overweight! For a part mastiff (even a small part), I wouldn't even consider neutering until at least 18 months, preferably 2 years old.
If your scales say he hasn't left you st weight, then at 7 months, he almost certainly has because he has grown as well!

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
Best thing I did was join this forum lol!
The vet recommended it because he's a bit hyperactive at the moment when I just assumed he was going through adolescence.
Will definitely be taking your advice though and leave him alone and just work harder on the training.

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
Staffords are notoriously lively! I'd expect a 7 month old of any breed to be lively, and there's no guarantee that castration would change that anyway.

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
Yeah his mum and dad are absolutely crazy so I knew he would be a livewire. He might be hyper but he's amazing with my 3 kids and that's really all that matters to me.

That's the thing - a bit of liveliness can be put up with, he'll grow out of a lot of it soon enough. He's good with people (especially kids) which is the main thing.

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
To be honest, my Nifty is now 18 months old and only starting to be much calmer and “stable”.
I do think Kane sounds too young to neuter, he’s still a baby !
Lively is a good sign that all is well

I totally wasn't for having him castrated but it was the vet who recommended it. Think they do that with every dog right enough! I'm gonna leave him as he is and just continue with his training.

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
My vet also told me that I could have Nifty spayed as from 6 months old
We waited until she was older and past her first season.
Problem with alot of vets is that they have you close by when pup is young as you’re doing vaccinations, regular pup wormers and the such so you’re regularly at the vets. They try to slide the spaying/neutering into the same “package deal”.

Yeah that's pretty much what happened with us. In fact they even threw in the bit about his breed and the possibility of aggression if he wasn't castrated

Re: 7 month old staffy weight
Hi there, I am new to this. My 6 month old Staffy boy weighs 19kgs. He was very much the biggest of the litter and he is just majestic. He has a great diet and plenty of exercise. There is no chub on him at all. I am concerned though when I read that an adult male should be 17kgs max!

Hello Takeyblonde and welcome to the forum.
Please do stop by the New Member Introduction to introduce yourself so we can all give you the warmest welcome
If your staffy boy KC registered ?
Don’t forget that breed standards are especially used for show ring criteria and breeding stock considerations. If your boy is destined to be your extra family member and maybe sporting buddy, it doesn’t matter if he fits in the mould or not.
There have always been breeding “issues” in the history of any breed of animal and you often get throwbacks to things that were done in the past but not authorized today. Like my Opium who arrived b&t when that colour is not to standard either.
Then you have to look at when these breed standards were dictated. Even humans today are taller and heavier than they were a century ago.
What I’m trying to say is that unless you were hoping to have a show ring champion or a KC stud dog, the only thing that matters is that he’s happy and healthy, which he sounds to be.
