Question on weight of almost 8 month old
Hi,
New to the breed and have a question. Have a female SBT who will be 8 months old in a wk. She is raw fed. Currently weights 27lbs (12kg) and is 15 inches (31cm). I've been told by many to keep puppies lean to avoid structure problems. Not skinny-no hip or rib but to me very healthy. High energy Her breeder has stated she needs more weight on her. Says a puppy should be heavier and I can always worry about weight as an adult. I do performance (flyball, agility, obed) and she is conformation. I do believe conformation people tend to be used to heavier dogs. She has been in the breed for many years so am not looking to discredit but it's a view I'm not sure about. Looking for opinions from others who have Staffords and can tell me if I am hurting my dog in the long run by keeping her lean now. Thank you for you time!

Re: Question on weight of almost 8 month old
I tend to think they should be a bit heavier as pups so they have the chance to fully devolp. Also any serious exercise ie jumping agility should be put off until 18 months of age. This lets their ligaments and joints fully devolp and be able to cope with the stress caused by exercise. Starting too early can cause joint issues when they get older.

She doesn't look too thin to me but do be careful with exercise until she's older

Re: Question on weight of almost 8 month old
of course I'm not training her now for performance I've been doing dog sports for 15 yrs with larger dogs. Just like with them I don't start jumping until growth plates are closed. She will be the same. Right now working on socialization and obedience and rally
Just making sure keeping her lean is not unhealthy as with my larger dogs that's what I've been taught is the right thing as it's less stress on growing joints.
Thanks for any help!

Lovely healthy dog in my opinion - not too thin at all.

Oh she is so beautiful! I think she looks healthy, a little bit lean but we are so used to seeing overweight dogs, she's probably of a much healthier weight.

Re: Question on weight of almost 8 month old
Mine is 7 months and 11kg. She still looks tiny, and I know they grow in heigh in first year and then develop size, but apparently health weight for females is between 11-15kg as adults. Which is odd because there is no way our girl could be this size when full grown

Re: Question on weight of almost 8 month old
Mine is 8.5 months and 20kg. What I have learned from seeing others locally and reading posts on here is that they are very variable in shapes and sizes and there is no point in worrying about it!

Re: Question on weight of almost 8 month old
Thank you everyone! I have compromised and added alittle weight and am very happy with how she looks I think the breeder was right-she was alittle too lean. She looks great and I think we are both happy. Not to fat and not to thin! Thanks again!

Re: Question on weight of almost 8 month old
I wouldn't worry too much about the weight tbh ... my 6 month old female weighs in at just over 12kg but I wouldn't say she is big or overweight at all.
Here she is at the beach
