Looking into purchasing staffy pup - currently own a boston terrier
Hi all,
I am new to these forums and was hoping for a little advice on whether or not the 2 breeds would be suitable.
We currently have a 4 month old Boston Terrier who has a great attitude, playful (can be a little boisterous jumps up at dogs faces occasionally, although we tell him not to i think he does it because he's so tiny he wants in on the action!) he's never shown teeth and only ever growled once when a lab sat on his head, I know i would do the same!!!
My husband and I took the Boston on as joint responsibility but soon after my husband was diagnosed with a medical issue that means he cannot walk far, so it's going to be me taking the boston on walks. We have always loved staffies and want a companion for our current pup ( when hes around a year old) but also want something a little bigger than a Boston so i feel safe walking them on my own in the dark winter nights.
I am not one for stereotyping and I am a big believer in "it's not the breed of the dog it's how they are bought up". However I have to be certain that I am making a good decision as I know all breeds are different in some ways.
My question is, would a staffie be well suited to our Boston? I am very dedicated to training my current pup and will continue to socialise him as much as poss before getting our staffie pup. Also, if introduced from a young age are they safe on their own together?
Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome from us.
Have no personal experience of 2 dogs living together but I would not have thought that the breed would be the main contributing factor but the individual characters.

In my personal experience being that my Hank’s bestie is a Boston terrier I’m going to tell you that they get on like a house on fire and absolutely love when they see each other, my friends Boston terrier is crazier than hank so will seem alot easier for you to train if you decide to get a staff
My friends Boston terrier is 4 months older than hank and have grown up together, the photos above were not long after we got hank

I think the post above says it all really but I do agree that it'll depend on their individual characters too.

If you get the Stafford as a pup I doubt that there will be any problems & they'll get on like a house on fire.
Would you be getting a dog or bitch pup?

Re: Looking into purchasing staffy pup - currently own a boston terrier
Gonna be honest, and get blasted (but whats new) i don't think now is the right time to think about another dog, esp a staff that can be quite high maintenance. a 4 month old pup on your own basically is already quite a task but can you imagine having your own dog twice plus the other issues that staff can have if they take the notion to be DA? If you want a guard dog, a staff probably not the dog for you. They are easy to train to be full on, but that is not the type of training anyone in the stafford world would WANT someone to teach theirs. And their look is not enough to put someone off, if they are wanting to come at you.
That being said, there is no "breed" a staff or a boston wont get along with if introduced properly..whether or not the two individual dogs get along as they mature and find themselves is another story.

Not blasting you at all, but we don't, as yet, know when she'll get the pup. If it's not for another 6 months or so then the Boston will be old enough to take it.
Also, the Stafford pup us highly unlikely to be DA towards the pup, and is also unlikely to be DA anyway - few of them are nowadays.

Re: Looking into purchasing staffy pup - currently own a boston terrier
Yeah, she had wrote in her post it would be when the Boston was around a year old. But thinking about it now that would still be a handful to manage, my friend Boston is still crackers now and I can remember when we got hank he needed 110% of our attention.
Also to make comment on feeling safe walking in the dark, I do with hank but not all dogs are the same, he's daft as a brush and would happily go off with a stranger but I know when we are walking in the dark he seems to be on the look out and anything that he isn't sure off gets a growl haha
