Hi I don't know if I'm on the right area of this site as I'm new but my partner came home with a puppy this week. I have always wanted a staffy but I'm not sure she is 100 percent staff can anyone tell me I love her to bits but I'm a bit worried she could be part pitbull as they are banned and would hate for her to be taken of us hope picture has uploaded New and need help is my pup a staff _5810

Hi and welcome from me and mine!

One thing I can tell you absolutely, that's one sweet puppy you've got there!

It's impossible to say at the moment what your girl will grow to look like, they can change quite a bit over the first months. What you need to know is that the definition of a 'pit bull type' for BSL (breed specific legislation) is based solely on looks. It doesn't matter what a dogs parents are, it is only what it looks like that counts. Don't worry, then, what her parents might have been.

The best advice is to socialise and train your puppy as well as you can. Go to puppy classes when you can (as long as it's a good, positive method trainer), and also train at home. These videos are great and are easy for you to do yourself

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0C724F6F6A597540

By making sure your dog is well behaved and doesn't bother anyone, you should make sure no one has any concerns or reason to get the police involved in the first place. That really is your best insurance policy.

Hello Smile and thankyou she is lovely and so friendly. Unfortunately we don't know anything about her parents she was dumped in a box by some bins a family member heard her and took her home then contacted my partner we've had her 2 weeks now and she's extremely loving we are going to take her to puppy classes once she's had her second vaccination we've found a local trainer that does them the vets have classed her as staff cross

She looks gorgeous. You, or your parents, must have had your hands full with a collie/staffie cross. We've had a few border collies and cross border collies over the years and are on to our first Staffies at the moment, I've got to say both breeds are right up there when it comes to energy and stamina. And most of the time our two curl up like that together but they do have their moments when they go at each other tooth and claw. They sound like a pair of chimps when they are baring their teeth at each other.

I've just replied in your other post. We have a trainer in our area who refuses to train staffies. It really upset me but I feel sorry for her now as she is the one who is missing out.

Find another place to go as that trainer is no trainer at all. No way would a good trainer send you away without knowing the dog first and certainly wouldn't be seeing aggression at such a young age.

I can understand why it would upset you but take comfort in the fact that the trainer is a numpty!! I also doubt very much Skye has any Pit in her at all. As Liz posted earlier on this thread, BSL doesn't discriminate as rather just lump all Type dogs together, so as long as Skye is socialised and well cared for you won't have any worries.

Skye is stunning. That trainer is a disgrace, I would put a complaint in. Don't let that idiot put you off classes as puppy classes are great for socialising. Sometimes word of mouth is a good way to find a good class

Im sorry you were treated this way as above its breed discimination and it boils my blood . U have overcame the first hurdle with regards to your son and pup bonding id try the local swing park as opposed to a dog park there will be all different dogs of various ages and a great way for socialisation. The important thing to remember is pups have a low attention span and keeping the training sessions to 10 minutes a day itll keep your dog interested just remember if they don't achieve the first time just spend a bit more time each day  id also say  everyone else in your house to use the same commands so your pup doesn't get confused.

Whether or not your dog would be typed as a pit bull is not for some person in the street or some judgemental trainer to decide. The only ones who could make that call would be specially trained people, mostly police offiers. Based on my experience (at an RSPCA affiliated rescue centre), I have to say that it is possible Skye would be assessed if (IF) the police ever got involved for any reason or if she was picked up by the dog warden. Have a look at the photos on here, this is the type of dog that we get positively assessed:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Pit_Bull_Terrier

HOWEVER... Skye has not been assessed so someone not qualified telling what she is is only making a guess.

As I said before, keep on making her the best dog possible - fingers crossed that the new trainer is more dog orientated!

If (again IF) you do ever have an issue with the police, contact DDA Watch immediately. http://ddawatch.co.uk/

A DNA check means absolutely nothing, it is 100% based on looks. A court may take temperament into consideration but it is a minor consideration, looks are what count. DNA simply does not come into it.

In fact, the Advertising Standards Authority has just upheld a complaint (mine) against Viaguard for claiming that they can certify a dog isn't a pit. If there is another company making that claim, please let me know and I'll complain about them too! It makes me very cross that anyone could try and make money out of people's fears and desire to protect their dogs like this.

Please feel free to pass that on to the person who recommended the test, don't let other people waste their money with this scam either.

I don't know much about it I'm afraid. But I do think it's a list of measurements & physical traits. It's very unfair. My sister's friend has a pitbull & he's a lovely dog. They had to go to court to keep him & he has to be muzzled at all times in public
