Trouble walking
Hi i'm new on here i purchased a staffy its just had her stitches out after being spayed last weekend when i went to view her she walked ok only thing i noticed she had a bit of a head wobble, she came to me friday 31/03/17 today 02/04/17 i took her in the garden and her back legs keep colpasing she is 2 and a half years old blue, should i be really concerned about this or will it be to do with her op which she had on the 22/03/17.
Thank you in advance for any advice.

Re: Trouble walking
Claire,I would say she should be well on the way of getting over the op by now,but it may be worth getting in contact with the vet that carried out the spaying on her and explain what is happening.Seems very unusual.

Re: Trouble walking
Hi Claire, welcome to the forum from Flo and me
I would take her to the vet and get her checked out, hopefully it won't be anything too serious but certainly doesn't sound right as Kit says.
Do let us know how she gets on

Re: Trouble walking
Hi thank you for your replys i rang the vets who did the op up yesterday as i noticed her head shaking they said op was fine could'nt really give me much info so i rang my local vets and got a emergency slot, took some videos of her walking and going to show it to a neurologist tomorrow as she thinks it could be something more, i have had a reply back off the last owner who now tells me it could of been born with a problem, i'm not happy about this as i feel she should of made me aware of this.
Many thanks

Re: Trouble walking
I can't believe the last owner wouldn't have said something good idea with the video as that will give a good indication to the vet, I really hope its something that can be easily treated for all your sakes, you must be quiet upset

Fingers crossed for you both, Claire.
Just out of interest, where did you get Millie from? If I'm understanding it right, you only got her recently as an adult, did the previous owner give you a reason for rehoming her?

Re: Trouble walking
Hi Liz this is how the ad was worded,
Looking to rehome our blue staffie Mildred (Millie).
Millie is a wonderful dog, full of beans and very loving to all she even gets on with our cat!
Due to personal commitments and our older male dog, regrettably we need to find a new loving forever home for her. Ideally, Millie would benefit from having a family to herself as she doesn't like sharing the attention. She is fully house trained, loves her walks but as yet hasn't been trained to be let off the lead and we are cautious around other dogs as she was attacked by dog last year.
We have just had her spayed and she will be ready to go to her new home from the end of March.

Re: Trouble walking
Hmmm... you have to wonder, don't you? On the one hand she's perfect but on the other hand not.
If this does turn out to be something pre-existing, I'd certainly be considering having a chat over vets bills.

Re: Trouble walking
Hi Liz I've just been at my vets over half an hour she's been on the phone to the previous owners vets and she come off the phone saying we will wait till the notes come through but it's not sounding good :-( sounding something like cerebral something to do with Millies brain and if this is the case it will be in the notes and the pervious owners will beware of this and never told me this information. and if this is the worst case the vet as told me she may start fitting and it's going to be no quality of life. Re: Trouble walking
At least your vet is onto it and should be able to piece things together.
Clearly the most important thing is Millie, and the emotional impact on you must be huge. I know there is probably nothing we can do to help but if there is, do ask.

Re: Trouble walking
Friends m the sounds of things it certainly sounds like there is history. This must be so upsetting on several fronts not least poor Millie, I guess all you can do now is wait on what the vet says. Like Liz says, if there is anything we can do to support you please do ask.

Re: Trouble walking
Hi everybody the vet as just phoned with not good news poor millie the previous owners was aware of the condition in brackets tremors and in the notes states always had this, i really don't want to have her put to sleep as the last owners was aware i wanted millie to run with me and its all on walking so this will never happen, the vet said i can always look for a home for dogs who take in basically disabled dogs.
Many thanks

Re: Trouble walking
Hi everybody if anyone knows of a place if there is such a place for homes for dogs with special needs as i don't want her going into kennels and i don't want to go down the road of euthansia as it would be such a crying shame to do that. I was'nt told the full facts when purchasing her as this is'nt fair on millie because i did state i walk for miles and wanted her to run with me and both of these are a none starter as stated by my own vets.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Re: Trouble walking
Your story has really got to me. I don't know which is stronger, the sadness I feel for you or the anger I feel towards Millie's last owner. Not only have you been completely misled, they couldn't even be bothered to make sure the new home was right for their dog. It's awful.
I have quite a bit of experience with rescue organisations - I'm very involved in animal rescue - and to be honest I don't know of anywhere that specialises in 'wonky' dogs, either for rehoming or for sanctuary. There are, though, places that work mainly through foster homes - that would be ideal but don't hold your breath. Finding any rescue place isn't easy - we're all chokka - so if you are looking to find a rescue space for Millie it might be a question of going with what you can get.
If you can't keep Millie, you might need to look at trying to find a rescue place that is in a kennel environment. If you decide to go down that route, let me know and I'll give you some tips on how to spot a bad 'un.

Re: Trouble walking
I feel so sorry for both you and her. It's such a shame as you sound like such a responsible owner, getting her spayed and to the vets etc.
Wish this has a better outcome for you both.
Why don't you get a second doggy for running and keep Millie too Ā seriously though I completely agree with you for not giving her to the previous owners. I really hope you can find a safe shelter for her xx

Re: Trouble walking
Hi Liz and Mistys Mum i just wanted to let you all know i'm not going to rush into doing anything i mite regret later so i'm going to think hard about my options other the nxt few weeks. And in the mean time if anybody does think of a suitable place for Millie how ever far from me i will drive millie there and meet in person which is only to be expected.
Thank you all for you kind words. She really isn't copping with my house which as steps into every room even the ground floor i live on a steep hill and there are steps down into my garaden, maybe if i lived elsewhere on the flat etc. plus she will come will a donation and all her new things.

Re: Trouble walking
Blimey, Claire, you'd owe me nothing at all! I just can't imagine how it must be for you, so anything I can do to help is a pleasure.
I've heard back from Zoe (one of the lovely people who run the Oldies Club). The consensus there is that Wonky Pets is worth a try but that maybe your best bet would be with a staffie specific rescue. There are loads, Zoe's given me a long list, but these are the ones I'd try first:
http://www.sbtrescue.co.uk/
http://www.staffordwelfare.co.uk/
http://www.happystaffierescue.org.uk/
http://roomfor1morestaffordrescue.com/index.php
A bit of a random idea is also to try https://www.seniorstaffyclub.co.uk/. I know Millie's not a senior but she's got similiar needs so I don't know if they'd be able to help out. We're great fans of the Senior Staffy Club here.
If none of those can help or are right for you, let me know and I'll ask at Danaher when I go in on Friday. Someone there might have other ideas to try.
In the meantime, is there any way you could use some boards to make ramps up steps at all? You obviously don't want to spend lots of money doing stuff to your house but just board with old carpet on might help her.

Re: Trouble walking
Hi Liz and all i'm going to stick with millie for a few weeks to see how she adapts as i am aware she will always have the silght head tremor but if her walking picks up as from the last time i was on here she will improve i'm sure she will, to be fair to millie she's never been walked i've found out and never been on steeps so yes i understand it will now take time but looking from last weekend till now you would have to say theirs a improvement, so fingers crossed it's just a matter of building her up a bit at a time as she as not very much muscle on her back legs so i truly believe this will come in time A really big thank you to liz & Ian for your words and help and anybody who i've missed out. I will update at a later stage so for now a Big Big Thank you Love Claire xxx

Re: Trouble walking
What wonderful news!! I'm so happy for you both!!Ā
Like Liz I have been thinking of you as it sounds Millie has a horrible start to life but has now won the lottery with getting you!
I really hope things work out. When we got Misty she had never had a walk before and it took a while for her to get her stamina up as she wasn't used to it.
Once again did I say how happy I am for you guys!

That's a great Avatar picture of you both. I think it's going to be a bit of a long haul getting Millie into reasonable shape but it sounds like you've seen a big improvement already.
Do please keep us update with how she gets along, she really does look adorable & if there's anything we can help with just yell

Re: Trouble walking
I was so hoping you'd say this!
It might be worth looking into something like hydrotherapy. It can be really helpful in building up muscle strength and promoting coordination. Maybe speak to your vet about it.
I love that photo. It feels like the sun might be shining on you both.
