Poorly boy
Could anyone help and give me some advice, help and information. I noticed a lump on my Stafforshires(Blade) paw on Wednesday. It's the the size of two peas. Ive had him to the vet and she thinks it's a Mast cell tuma.
Blades almost 11 but very fit still. I've started researching this but would love to speak to people with experience of this before I make a informed decision of what course of action to take.

Re: Poorly boy
Thanks I have him booked to remove it next Monday. It's next to his dew claw and black. It doesn't seem to be bothering him too much. The problem is because of the area it will be hard to take surrounding skin.
I suppose dependant on the biopsy results will then help with the direction I then go down.

Re: Poorly boy
Hey Steven! Was Wednesday the first time that you had noticed the lump? If not, how fast did it grow to that size? It may be a little harder to remove margins, but if they're really concerned once they have a good look they may just remove the whole dew claw.
Bug has had various lumps and bumps - her first was on her hind led and grew very fast (within 2 weeks) it was black and looked as though it had a shiny film on it - it was really irritating and she was chewing it a lot. This turned how to be a cancerous tumour (melanoma) which was removed with margins and we decide not to go ahead with chemo as she was otherwise young and fit. She has has 2 more black lumps since, which we have removed swiftly and biopsied - thankfully both of these have been benign, and like your boy haven't bothered her at all.
You're right that until you have the results there's nothing that you can do, they should only take a week or so to come back, it's hard but try not to stress too much, lumps are very common in Staffies, especially as they get older. Keep us updated and good luck

Re: Poorly boy
Hi Rachel
On Monday Blade went for surgery later the vet rang to say there was no sign of problems in tests on kidneys and although liver was slightly abnormal it could be his Metacam and she thought the lump wasn't as bad did I still want her to go ahead?(although I think it's settled it hasn't diminished)
I asked if that meant he didn't have a tuma ?
She said she couldnt say. She asked did I still want to go ahead? At first I said yes, then I mentioned because of its position she said didn't believe she could take enough skin even if it was.
I asked for her advice? I was met with ambiguity.
So my decision was to do two more test and come back to me.
I didn't think that removing most of his sock without a better diagnosis was justified.
I should have results by Friday. When I mentioned, was there any point in surgery even if it was if we couldn't take enough skin and the wound more than likely wouldn't heal properly at first because of the width, lack of skin?
I was then told sometimes the tumas don't spread but she then said because of the location she wouldn't be able to get any depth under the lump.
I hope you followed that

Re: Poorly boy
Hey Steven. That sounds like a sensible decision, especially if it's not growing or troubling him. Did she mention the other tests that she was doing?
Before Bug's most recent surgery my vet offered a fine needle aspiration, to take a sample of the lump and detect if it was cancerous, but this isn't possible if the lump is too small. It might be something to consider if there's still a concern though! Fingers crossed for the test results!

Re: Poorly boy
Morning Rachel, I've had that done as well as a different liver test. Unfortunately as fare as I'm aware the needle test can be indecisive.
Thanks again and I'll let you know the results
