My puppy wont take naps during the day
Hi everyone - im just looking for a bit of advice
I have a lovely 4 month old staffy. shes a confident & energetic wee pup and is great in her crate and sleeping at night. we walk her 2x a day for 20 mins, lots of play and do some simple training with her but we are finding that she just will not stop even when we can see she is tired - this is when she becomes overtired and starts nipping/biting and being a little terror! and our only solution is to crate her for a nap. It only takes a few minutes and shes sound asleep.
I was just wondering if this is normal and if in time she will gradually settle and be able to fall asleep of her own accord?!

Baxter would have massive zoomie episodes up to about six months, he's ten months now and these seem to have stopped other than the odd one. He gets waked for about an hour at lunch time or in the morning then again for half an hour around 7pm, he'll settle down after that. He does know what time his evening stroll is and won't settle until,he's been

Re: My puppy wont take naps during the day
Hi ya, welcome to the Forum.
I'm guessing that she probably hasn't worked out that tired means sleep yet. putting her in the crate to time out and sleep is probably a good idea and I'm sure she will learn when to nap, most do pretty quickly
When you get a min, pop along here and say Hi to everyone:-

Crate for naps sounds fine to me as long as it's only short spells - better than becoming over tired and means you can get stuff done! She won't moderate her energy herself if there's loads of stimulation and fun things going on.

Re: My puppy wont take naps during the day
thanks for all your comments! we do try and keep everything quiet and relaxed when we see shes tired but she will lie down for a min then find something to do - for example chasing her tail! lol she just doesn't stop!

Re: My puppy wont take naps during the day
im starting to think that maybe she could do with a little more exercise but I am very aware that too much exercise could be a bad thing. Do you think 2x20 minute of casual walking be enough for her?!
I feel so clueless as to how often she should be napping and how long for as I don't want to crate her for longer than she needs. Im so confused

Re: My puppy wont take naps during the day
The general rule is 5 mins per month of age, 2 or 3 times a day

Bane used to be just the same! It would get to evening time and no matter what you tried to do to calm him down and just chill on the sofa he would go nuts. Put him in his bed alone and he would be fast asleep in seconds
If you find that she falls asleep easily when left in her crate, just wait until she wakes up and let her out. See how it goes. If you feel she needs a little more stimulation, try playing indoor games like Find It with toys and treats or try teaching her new tricks. Mental stimulation can be more tiring than physical

Re: My puppy wont take naps during the day
thank you! its reassuring to know that other pups have been the same! ive never come across this before. We walk her 3x a day when we have been working and are doing more with the training and games indoors (she just loves it!)

I think they just don't know when to stop when they're young! Make the most of it
