Mia update
Just thought I'd share a little update on Mia, we have had her almost 2 weeks & we are having problems with stopping her with her biting and she started to growl at us, we are hoping it's just cuz she is still so young and teething? , we notice she has got worse when we started to introduce her with new food. Could anyone give me any advice or reassurance please thanks

Re: Mia update
Typical puppy behaviour, not aggression at all. Just be firm and high pitched squeal worked for me when gets too rough. What are you feeding?

Re: Mia update
Ruby is 10 weeks old has been with us a week and she's snapping and biting all the time..normal puppy behaviour.
I'm hoping it settles when I can start walking her at the weekend.
I tell her firmly no and distract her with other chew toys.

Re: Mia update
Ok I knew that puppies like to nibble and bite but last few days we seen a big rise in her biting and barking, hope I am just worrying about nothing, we were feeding her on burgess supadog puppy (dry) now i just starting her on a dry food from a good local pet shop with their own dry food which has high meat content and no wheat or grain.

Re: Mia update
It's definitely sore gums then you reckon & not the change of food, any ideas on what ingredients in dog food what might cause a change in behaviour

Re: Mia update
A poor quality food with lots of additives will cause behaviour similar to feeding a child too much sugar. The biting and barking are very normal

Re: Mia update
I promise you things will get better I know its so hard at the moment, my hands are still scarred from Roxy's biting. If things get a bit much I used to use a water spray and spray her, she soon got the message. Thankfully Roxy hated getting wet !! Just try to use the loudest voice possible and say no.. when she bites too hard.. but dont wag your finger at her otherwise she will bite that too. Just fold your arms so she cant get at you so much. HOnestly Roxy changed almost over night when I could walk her. Keep going .. you are nearly there

Re: Mia update
Another little problem we got is how much food to give her, we are going to the guidelines on the food pack but she seems to be hungry still, do I just give her more?

Re: Mia update
As a pup I generally go by the guidelines or maybe just a bit more. They will always still seem to be hungry though

Re: Mia update
Gizmo pointblank refused to eat Burgess, so we left it out for the foxes and they wouln't eat it either!
Burns is our go-to dry food, it's a bit pricey but he eats it happily. For the teething a guy at work suggested some teething rings like for babies and you put them in the freezer. Cut down the nipping and gnawing of the razorsharp puppyteeth pretty well.

Re: Mia update
Think it could be because of the change in her diet how long has she been on the new food?

Re: Mia update
We have slowly mixed in the new food over a week, today is the 1st day she's had 100% new food not mixed, it is quite a lot different to the old food, old food was more carbs & grain & wheat, whereas the new food is high meat & protein & wheat free

Re: Mia update
Her poo has gone back to normal now, but her aggressive biting has increased especially to my girlfriend, don't know if she sees my girlfriend as the mother figure? I'm hoping after she gets her 2nd jab on Tuesday & we can then take her on walks & introduce her to family dog's she will calm down?

Re: Mia update
Pleased to hear her rear end is back to normal, it normally takes a while for them to adjust to new food.
I can assure you it isn't true aggression as they don't know what that is at this age. I would suggest it's intense play and is just being over playful with your girlfriend. Suggest that your girlfriend interacts but keeps hands well clear and replaces it with a rope toy or something. The more she does this the sooner Mia will learn, but remember, she is still really young and has an awful lot to learn

Re: Mia update
At that age it is unlikely to be aggressive biting and more likely to be attention seeking. Make sure she has stimulating play both with people and on her own (my favourite for the latter is hiding treats in an old cereal box), and then when she comes demanding attention through biting at other times, give a big squealy 'ouch', hide you hands and, if necessary, just stand up and walk away. I wouldn't give her another toy at that point as she may think that biting gets you to give her a toy. Don't give her any attention, not even telling her off, for biting or growling as that will in her mind make it pay.
Be consistent, each and every time, and she will learn how what works (being gentle) and what doesn't.
