heart pumping out of my chest type dog walk!
Was taking ruby and bes out for there second walk as I only walk all four in the morning as the springers are 13 and 14 and I dont want to over do it for them, me and michael was throwing the ball on a rope for bes and ruby, we seen a few jack russels who came over to play for a brief period and had a chat with their owner who is also lovely but they had to go as she had to get home for her tea, any who we was throwing the ball on cricket pitch which is around 800m plus in circumference with a gravel path round it, to the right of us is trees for about 20m then another field but its higher up on the ground, as ruby and bes are running for the ball, all of a sudden a woman is screaming shiba, which worried me then out of the trees came hurtling a german shepard must of ran 500m easy towards us as I seen it running it was running towards bes the lady was scream shiba still again and again, I shouted over to michael pick her up, I shouted ruby and ran to pick her up, just as he picked bes up it was jumping snapping to get her so I ran over too with ruby in my arms, we where pushing it away with our feet, it had no collar no harness nothing on, the woman just kept shouting I couldnt even see her, michael pushed it away in the face and then it decided to run back to its owner, she didnt shout sorry no nothing, my heart was in my mouth! Bloody petrified me! But on an up side I gave ruby a cuddle and then she heard sirans and barked! Shes never barked ever! Haha rubys first bark was made up at the same time as my heart pumping put my chest!

Scary stuff Hannah. Wonder weather it slipped it's collar but either way it hasn't been trained for recall very well. Pleased to hear you're all ok

I do wonder how these women handle such big dogs, I once came across a middle aged lady with an Alsation it was on lead but it dragged her across the floor trying to get at Vin!

You must have been so scared! Glad everyone is okay and no one was hurt! When will people learn to keep control of their dogs! Sounds like that GS needs serious recall lessons!

Re: heart pumping out of my chest type dog walk!
i belive i said in a post a few days ago that too many people decide that the training ends when their dogs have stopped crapping on the kitchen floor. well i think that applies in this case. utterly ridiculous that people have so little control over their animals.
me and tessa passed a guy on the opposite side of our local canal yesterday and he had 2 really nasty gsds that really wanted to kill her. now tessa is a very confident dog and will always stand her ground but not once did she bark back at them she just stood there all puffed up eyeing them.
nice friendly well behaved dogs you got there mate i said to him. he said nothing not even taking his dogs away or telling them off.
i stopped worrying about other peoples dogs a long time ago as i love my walking time with tessa and i refuse to have it spoiled by dickheads. i do the right thing by putting tessa on the lead when other people with dogs approach but if they don't do the same and their dogs start on mine then they have to accept the consequences.

Re: heart pumping out of my chest type dog walk!
Thank you kita and it definitely does, tbh if it was friendly I wouldnt of been bothered but because it wanted to bite them I was really scared but id rather the dog bite me than my dogs, and I completely agree dazoldo and I have similiar instances with an elderly man with a lurcher, and I know I agree I think lately ive worried more as my springers are 13 and 14 and the 14 year old has a heart murmur so we cannot operate on him, and hes a big softy sp of a dog goes for him he just gets bit, the only one that would retaliate is my 6 year old staff shes super friendly unless a dog goes for her and my 10 month old would just get eaten, thank you for all your comments

Glad everybody is ok I can't understand how people underestimate the recall part in training .
You don't need to be a big man to control a big dog it's all about confidence knowledge and lots of training I met yesterday a lady in her 70s with a big GSD without a lead and totally under control and thought nothing special about it .

Re: heart pumping out of my chest type dog walk!
I know people really do underestimate recall, what would she of done of I had 2 dogs that didnt like other dogs it would have been mayhem, and see that just proves it doesnt matter your age its just about training your dog, thank you for your comment

Re: heart pumping out of my chest type dog walk!
I know full well about recall, neither of mine have it, period and its not just about training. in some dogs prey drive will overide everything we teach them. so mine stay on lead pretty much all the time. they know left, right, steady, spead up, on by, leave, stay. hike while working yet walk them on/offlead they are simply brats. the gsd sounds like it was just simply following one of its prime drives in the prey model and thats chase and herd. would quite honestly forgo bite but who wants to take that risk.

Re: heart pumping out of my chest type dog walk!
It's the old carrot and stick thing, some people will do the right thing because they're self driven to do it and others are driven for an easy life and will only do the right thing when it suits them or when forced. 24/7 force required for some. Why should the rest of us have to suffer undeserved stress because of their laziness and ignorance. We need protection from this brain dead rubbish.
Re: heart pumping out of my chest type dog walk!
Ruby use to be the same nathan but I just had to be persistant with it and as shes getting older shes got alot better, try a long line nathan one of them at a time it does work just takes a while,
and I agree stan 80% of the dogs where I walk mine are out of control, and I think we do when a comes hurtling its self at you and your dog to bite your dog thats complete ignorance by an owner it really is, especially as it as off lead

Re: heart pumping out of my chest type dog walk!
wow,,, very scary. That would have been terryfying for me as Sheila is petrified of Alsations and so make her aggressive towards them. She is not good with strange dogs period, quite unreliable, so she is never off the lead. The only time she is off the lead is when we are at our caravan and there are 2 area enclosed that we can let her off and see for miles if anyone else is heading towards the area Her recall is pretty bad too,, she will come mostly,,but again unreliable and if she is distracted well thats it lol,, and it dont take much to distract her.
Some people seem to see it as horrible for the poor doggie to be on a lead,, when its not at all really,, she has a long lead so she can wander a bit

Re: heart pumping out of my chest type dog walk!
It was, the adrenaline rush I had as well was crazy very scary as the owner didnt even come to get hee dog just kept shouting, and bes has been bit by a lot of alsations, and I understand where your coming from as long as yourdog is happy thats all that matters, I trained ruby with a long line really helped with her recall as shes easily distracted by anything lmfaoo
